I too grew up in El Paso, and enjoyed this cool, summer getaway in the pines.
Winter "tubing" also. If you want to go back for a moment, take in their website. :-) Just a great place to "escape," that hasn't changed that much in the past 30 years. Thank God! I don't know if it will be camping, or cabins, but I'll be returning in 2008.

To Shaddow: I looked into this option while I was searching to buy a cabin up there. One thing I found is that when you buy a kit from a company, make sure the logs are able to stand up to that particular area's climate. Like they might buy a kit from Idaho so that its a similar place weatherwise. The big deal in that whole Cloudcroft/Ruidoso area (and really all of NM) is water. No one makes promises that water can be found on a property so it really is buyer beware. I ended up buying a cabin from a guy named Wayne Ziegler. He has built a few up there. I think mostly he builds to sell right now but he is going to eventually stop and build a place for himself. He did a very good job on the place I purchased. It was in James Canyon about four miles outside of Cloudcroft. I heard mixed feelings on Joe Dees who also builds up there. These guy buy land and do one spec house a year or so. I spent a lot of time up there just asking questions of the townspeople to get a feel for what is up with some of this land for sale. I would encourage you to do that as well. There is only about one Realtor there I trust so e-mail me privately if you want a name of somehow and who to stay away from. Good luck.

Nice pic there 6 foot 3, over looking Haynes Canyon, the Sky Line Ranch is the little clear area that you see with the single building.
If ya could tell exactly where it was you could see my house on down the canyon about a mile.
As for log cabins, Joel Dees has been building them around here for years, never heard anything bad about them and have seen his work and would have no problems with him.
Robert and Clayton Colburn are the local Kuhns Brothers reps. They have built one or two in the are also.
Kevin Heinrich (sp ??) also builds them in the area.

Thanks Mtncat for the reminder on the Kuhns Brothers. I also heard good things about them.

Mtncat....I think that is my favorate view in ALL of New Mexico. When i visit Alamo i always have to go up to Cloudcroft and then over to the Sun Spot Hyway and stop at Haynes Vista at 9000 ft over the valley on the rim and all the pine trees around and smelling the Pine scent and the wind blowing thru the trees and what not is just awe inspiring !!

Wondering if it's getting congested in Cloudcroft
I've been to Cloudcroft a few years ago... still looking for a place to retire with pristine skies. From a look with Google Earth and Real estate listings it looks like there is a lot of developments moving in. I remember Cloudcroft as a quant village... is this all changing? Comments would be appreciated. Lon

6 foot 2, yup great view. The trees should be changing colors soon and the view from there gets even better. Lot's of maple at the skyline ranch.
I was raised in Haynes canyon, left for about 15 years and then came back.
Just spent the last 27 months working at the ranch for a remodel of the old lodge.
I have not looked but I would imagine that the view from the vista has changed just a bit since ya took your picture.

The village looks the same. I don't think there is much room for development in the downtown proper. I can't see it growing that much.
The town can get busy with all the tourists, but who says you need to live in the town proper? I would want outside the city limits to see the sky better and have my space. If you want some realtors numbers let me know.

I thought mosr log homes were kits with some assembly required. Sort of modular homes with lots of modules.
Kidding. A log home in Cloudcoft would be very very nice.
