When we get a snow it can be somewhat like that. But others forget it...

Default Does It Snow In The Albuquerque Area?

I saw pictures online of a supposed albuquerque snow, but I didn't realize it could snow in the desert. How often and how much does it snow there?

It snows in the desert, yes. This year has been pretty weak. 2006 we had 16" over the Holidays.

Technically, we're not really a desert region.

Yes it snows in Albuquerque. Usually only a few times in winter, and even fewer will it "stick" and actually acumulate. Seems like at least once each winter we get a really good storm that leaves several inches of snow - but it's usually gone pretty quick. Albuquerque is higher than Denver, CO - so we're not at all like the low elevation Mohave or Sonoran deserts of S. Calf. or Arizona.

Here's a previous post on this topic. Basically...average of 6-8 inches of snow per year near the Rio Grande to around 25 inches above 6000 foot elevation...and 50-60 inches on the east side of the mountains above 7000 feet.

Albuquerque's official snowfall for 2009 was a mere 1.5 inches -- the 2nd lowest in history. Now rewind back to the end of December 2006 -- we got 18" at our house. That was by far the most snow I'd ever seen fall here in 30 years. Usually 6 inches is a "doozy" for us and those storms are rare.

Here's a couple of photos from that once in a hundred year storm:

Backyard:

Notice the street is covered in snow. No snow plows! We were the only ones on our block with a shovel. People were using pieces of cardboard to scrape the snow out of their driveways.

it does snow, but not much at all, and if you live on the Westside, you might even see less, most of the time the snow is gone by noon.
