Coen brothers to film here next month

Directors Joel and Ethan Coen will shoot scenes in the Santa Fe area during March and April for their remake of the western True Grit, Gov. Bill Richardson announced Thursday.

The Paramount Pictures production is expected to employ about 100 New Mexico cast and crew members, a news release said.

True Grit, set for release on Christmas Day 2010, is based on a 1968 novel by Charles Portis.

John Wayne won an Oscar for his portrayal of cynical deputy marshal Rooster Cogburn in the first film version in 1969.

The new adaptation will star Jeff Bridges in that role. Matt Damon will play La Boeuf, a Texas Ranger who joins Cogburn in the search for a murderer.

Bridges is up for an Oscar for his performance in Crazy Heart, a movie also shot in New Mexico.

The Coen brothers' 2007 release No Country for Old Men, filmed in New Mexico and Texas, received four Academy Awards.
Why in the world would a remake of a classic - much less a classic in which John Wayne won an academy award - even be attempted? Can't the studios find anything of contemporary interest in the hundreds of "best sellers" published each week? No Country for Old Men was based on a such a recent novel.

Pretty much my exact thoughts. I remember when True Grit came out. Have watched it several times over the years.

Maybe because the directors Joel and Ethan Coen were teenagers when True Grit came out?

Sort of reminds me of when VW released the new "Beetles" ...

The sad thing is that this remake may well be a fine film in its own right, but it's
already got two strikes against it from all the people like us who remember the
original.

I'm normally passionately against remakes, but I like these directors. I wouldn't expect them to turn a grand old lady into a bimbo, so I'll eagerly await the results.

Plus, I seriously doubt more than a handful of people under 40 willingly watches John Wayne movies. If nothing else this remake will inspire them to watch the original and compare. I think that's far better than leaving the original collecting dust when John Wayne's moviewatching audience passes on.

Yes, but he may not care. So... I guess... no.

I'm a jerk for doing this, but I had to:

John Wayne Art | Frontier Restaurant

John Wayne's portrait with thumbtacks -- brilliant!

John Wayne Portrait - shooting revolver

bathroom John Wayne

I imagine some of these pictures are worth multiples of 5 figures.

Remakes are the result of no new ideas?
I like originals too. 3:10 to yuma-glen ford, the remake? too much blood & guts.
At least early film makers, directors etc. could get a point across to someone without all of the gory blood letting details.

They sure don't make movies like they used to.

I would prefer a silver mine prospector being bush-whacked by 3 hombres, and a marshal going after them in this rugged countryside. The 3 hombres jumping on a train and hijacking it and making it stop in Ricon and then fleeing to the Black Range, with the marshal hot on their heels.

I'll give the remake a chance. Who knows, it might be good. But it seems to me that it is unnecessary, and as Mike Horrell says, the bar was raised pretty high by the original.
