If it does both the heating and the a/c functions, then it
is, indeed, a heat pump. For an electrically heated house,
I can't imagine that you would use anything else.

You can use window units or even have a permanent unit
installed in a hole in the wall. Your husband can't have a
problem with using a swamp cooler in May, June, and Sept
(can he?)
|
It may be...I'm not sure. It was already installed by the time I looked at the construction, so I had no choice.
I know that I do have a heat pump here in Midland, yet I have TWO units...one outside where the old condenser unit was....and also the furnace in the garage in the same place as the old one.
It's only about 3 years old.
BTW.......the heat is gas, as well as the water heater and stove/oven. Having lived in total electric for 28 years, that is going to take some getting used to.

vonoventwin warned:

Not quite. "Misters" which are found in Phoenix and Las Vegas
put a fine mist in the air.
A swamp cooler cools via evaporation and thus add humidity to
the air in the house. During May, June, and Sept this is actually
a desired effect.
There is a difference. I'm assuming that vonoventwin actually
knows the difference and rushed the description. I'm also
assuming that he's not willing to put up with evaporative
cooling's shortcomings and is thus quite biased.
> Central AC/Heat is by far the best.
He's right in that refrigerated air will cool down your
house more in any kind of weather. In (what we call)
humid air (in NM), it will be much more effective.
A good parallel would be selecting a car with a bigger
engine. You might think that a V6 is totally inadequate,
so you go for the V8. The V8 is more pleasing to drive,
but you pay for it at the gas pump. Your monthly bill
will be how you pay for the refrigerated air. You might
pay perhaps $20 vs $80 for a month of moderate cooling.
Some people actually prefer swamp coolers like some prefer
a V6 over a V8. There are other benefits such as improved
handling. Evaporative coolers allow you to have some
windows open and replace the air in your house constantly.

Re
I hate Alamogordo. What's so great about this town? Walmart? The crappy school districts (NM is one of the worst in the nation), the lack of stuff to do, lack of industry, etc. It's a dump and I would never recommend this town to anyone.

alamogordo123 ~
I have to agree with harry o. Life is just too short to live anywhere you hate as much as you hate alamogordo. I also hope you will get to move elsewhere very soon.

Catman, if everybody that hates it leaves, think of how great the place will be with all those friendly, smiling faces.....
Even though I am leaving Midland, I don't hate it, and never have. I'm just ready to move to the mountains!!!
And....IF I end up not liking Alamo, there is nothing to stop me from packing up and moving again, though the old aching bod isn't too keen on thinking of that possibility right now, LOL!!!!!!
