Default Census by telephone...

Anyone in SE NM been called for the survey. A friend of mine in Otero Co. was called and they did not give him a name or ID #, just wanted the info?

I also put this out under politics etc., wanted to get a wide answer.

I don't think that is how it's done...forms are sent to a resident or hand delivered according to the Census office.

HW

They are hand delivering in the rural areas outside of Albuquerque. I thought that was how they were handling all of the rural areas. The guy last week that gave me my form told me they needed to verify addresses in person b/c of the errors and omissions that can happen in the rural areas.

Angry census by tlephone

The census is only done by mail. If the form is not returned...I think by April 10...They will start sending people to the houses that have not responded. Never answer any personal Questions over the phone.
This is a scam going around to get personal information

The link I provided states that they do make survey calls, but they do not ask for personal information. The OP did not state whether or not the caller he is speaking of asked for anything personal.

There is a bill being pushed through the US legislature to curtail use of the name "census" by people capitalizing on the event for personal gain - and scams are part of the reason. I would never give information over the phone or to someone at my door who did not have proper identification. And even then, I would never give them personal financial account numbers or SS numbers.
Quote:
If a Census Bureau employee is at your door, he or she will
  1. Show you their Census Bureau identification badge,
  2. Tell you the name of the survey for which your participation is needed
  3. Provide a copy of the notification letter you received or should have received, in the mail describing the survey.
The field representative will also tell you approximately how long the survey will take to complete, why the information you provide is important, and how the Census Bureau protects the confidentiality of your answers.
Depending on the survey, a field representative or enumerator may carry a laptop or hand-held computer bearing the insignia of the Census Bureau. Some of our surveys no longer use paper questionnaires and the field representative will enter your responses directly into the computer. This allows us to process information more quickly and improves the quality of the statistics we produce.
