sarahsez is right. I love SE New Mexico, but to make a living is something else. I would think a decent mechanic would always find work no matter where you relocate. Regarding assisted care/nursing, it would seem you would do fine there. I always thought carlsbad to be a good fit for retirees; warm climate, affordable housing.

A friend of mine lives north of there near Hagerman, one time I asked him why Carlsbad doesn't grow a little. He said basically what ajzjmsmom said. Going down Canal Street through the south end of downtown is going back in time, and that is not meant in a good way. There is a good ol' boy network there that does not want growth there-period.

I came close to being employed and moving there in 1992, got an interview at the WIPP site, which is 25 miles east of town. Didn't get the job, but stayed in the area for a few days. Sadly, yes, the real estate has shot up there in the last several years, but so has many areas of the southwest.

I still say Carlsbad can be doable, anymore the factor with me would not be employment, but if the health care facilities are adequate. There is another Carlsbad thread in the NM forum here, hopefully you can find more info.

Actually the hospital was okay but the lack of doctors is something else. I needed to have my female annual done and there was a 3 month waiting list to get into the only gyn/ob in town. Half of the doctors weren't taking new patients. Carlsbad was just not a good fit for me and it just seemed like it took forever to get anywhere.

I don't know if they've replaced the ob/gyn's or not. Mine left. My family doctor had someone in the office that would also perform the annual so there were other options. It is hard to find a doctor at times. Sometimes they could work us in and sometimes not. This may have changed, but the hospital emergency room sort of operated as Urgent Care at times. There simply weren't other options.

We finally had a couple of dentists move into town. They would also see children which was a big help.

Living there, you had to accept that you were going to have to drive someplace for shopping specialists, good restaurants, etc.

There needs to be some main stream media investigation for that town and figure out what the problem is. I live in North Texas, visited Carslbad this past summer and noticed that something is not right with that whole community. maybe politicians care about themselves and dont really care about the future of mostly hispanics or low income families, most are drunks and drugies generation after generation. That town needs to be cleaned for sake of young people.

Carlsbad needs to learn to help itself. If you don't like the politicians, vote them out of office and vote someone else in. If you want more money, get a job. If that job doesn't pay enough, then get an education and find a job that does pay more. If you can't pass a drug test to get a job, then help yourself and get off the drugs. Opportunity for betterment is available, but the first step is to help yourself.

My husband and I moved here this past August. We never thought about moving to Carlsbad before ( lived in Las Cruces, NM ) but he got a job here, so that's why we decided to move. We are in our early 20s, just starting out, and so far, this place is working for us. The cost of living here is lower than the places we've been looking at. I agree with previous posts - although there are restaurants and stores here, it's a limited amount. For now this place is working for us, although I don't expect us to live here forever.
When it comes to jobs, I hear it's very tough to find jobs...We would've never moved if my husband didn't get a job prior to moving...
We're just building our house and had trouble finding good real estate agents in the town. However, we were lucky enough to find an excellent real estate agency here ( Means Real Estate ).
When it comes to doctors, I do find that most of them have long waiting lists...
Hope this helps a little...Good Luck to you!!!

By all means,be certain that there are excellent medical facilities close by...based on my experience at least.
Some of us go thru an entire lifetime and seldom see ...even a General Practitioner, then others are MARRIED TO A TEAM OF SPECIALISTS. I have missed Carlsbad,White Sands and the natural beauty of Southern New Mexico. But Americans should ALL see The Land of Enchantment.....once in their lifetimes.
Let us also keep LITTER inside our vehicles. I cannot wait...arthritis be damned.

That may change in the future if the push to open up the nuclear repository site to storage of HI-LEVEL radioactive waste comes to fruition. There was a news article on the air today concerning that eventuality. Carlsbad's current mayor spoke favorably for the project, claiming it would be foolish to turn down such a great opportunity to bolster the economics of the area.
