No inspection in Santa Fe county and you can drive a vehicle that would be illegal in other states. For instance, I have seen and driven vehicles with windshields criss-crossed with cracks.
If you are anywhere near the Los Alamos DMV -- use it. It is never crowded.
It was $122.60 to plate, register, and title my wife's 1997 Toyota.

We pay about $110/month for comprehensive insurance coverage for the pair.
(Insurance is optional in the State of New Mexico -- as is the driver's license.)

Actually, I was being sarcastic. Surprise!
The insurance and the driver's license are both optional. At most, you'll get a night in jail and you can be back out and driving the next day. People do it all the time here. It's just not important to some people.
I think it's optional in a lot of places... But we'll certainly insure ours (and get driver's licenses), I don't think I'd like to spend a night in jail.
I have to pay Sales tax on the new car that we bought. It was very clearly stated in our contract. The only catch is that we get a say in where we pay the tax...
As in
We can choose my husbands home of record, which is WV or where we are being stationed, which is NM.
I looked online for % and couldn't get a clear number for NM, however any number I got was lower than WV. So needless to say we are going to be using NM.
3% is what I got on a website as well as here.
