Moving to Alamogordo
I am moving to alamogordo in Sept. We have been talking to a real estate agent. We have been looking at a homes online. The house is on Dewey lane. I am looking for any information about the area. (i.e crime, negihborhood and schools) and anything else you would like to share.
Would also like the same information about the baylor av and hendrix av area.
I have been reading alot about the floodzone. Will the area be in the floodzone?

Hi,
OK, Dewey Lane is in the flood zone, its down by the blind school. We looked at a house there 10 years ago and found that out.
Hendrix is at heights grade school, heard it was the best, but I don't have kids of that age. Baylor, is on the north side and I don't think it is in the flood, and it is Sierra elem for school. Not sure which school dewey lane is.
Your realtor should be able to tell you about the flood zones, and the ratings on the schools. Not sure about the crime in the areas.
Welcome to town..
Jane

I assume North Elementary for Dewey Lane. All 3 of these streets are in different parts of the city and all 3 are in the older areas and not the newer Northern (Mall) or Southern (Golf Course) Subdivisions. I cant think of any area i wouldn't live in Alamo except the Public Housing area on First Street and Washington Park. I think Alamo averages one murder every other year?? Also lots of Police in that city (watch for speed traps).
As for Flood Zone 3/4 of the city is on a slant as its built right up next along the mountains so runoff can be bad especially when Flash Flooding occurs although rare.....

Hello
I live in Alamogordo and I know for a fact that Yucca Elementary is the best Elementary school. Bar none, it's no Long Island, NY school but it is the best here. I highly recommend finding a home in that area. You will also be on the newest and best side of Alamo. If you tell me what your looking for (price, size wise) I can tell you some great subdivisions to live in. I own one home here that I just rented out for a three year lease and now I'm going to buy another one. My bit of advice, BUY NOW... Prices keep going up. You would think they would stay low b/c of all the land to build around here. Problem is you can't build thousands of homes b/c there is only so much water to go around. Therefore home prices will keep rising. I bought my first home here for $203,000 one and a half years ago and now it's already worth over $220K. But you won't see that equity unless you buy in the Yucca school district. Trust me, the only other place I might consider is Cottonwood Height, just b/c it's a pretty nice subdivision, but the school isn't great..

Hey vonovetwin,
My husband and I are wanting to move back to Alamo, what other
contractors are there one base. He is civil service at the moment
but might consider a contractor. Hes a Support Agreements manager
in Logistics here at Vandenberg AFB. Seems like civil service is who
ya know, not what you know. Sure is hard to get back to Alamo once
you leave there. Any info appreciated. thanks

Olds Hi,
As far as your housing search, What is the address on Dewey, the reason I ask is that Dewey continues on East quite a bit. Any of the houses on Dewey East of Washington are all pretty decent and not in the flood zone. Hendrix is in the flood zone, not that there is alot of rain there but when it rains hard it always seems to flood out. I used to live on College Ave. This part of Alamo is a nice area. From College Ave. east up to Scenic Ave. are some fairly nice homes alittle older but have been kept up quite nice. Houses east of Scenic are newer homes and alittle more expensive. My kids went to Buena Vista Elem. and I was always pleased with all of the teaching staff and Principal. I don't know weather your looking for newer homes or the older "snow homes" as they were called with flat roofs. All I can tell you is that Alamogordo is a great place to raise your family. There's not alot for the kids to do, but the community center is great. My kids loved going swimming there and doing the other activities they offer. As for the crime "not bad" being a former DPS officer in Alamogordo, I can tell you that the Police department tries there hardest to patrol the neighborhoods daily. There are a few areas that have gotten bad over the years, that I would not recommend for family's due to the Meth problem. These areas are around Brookdale and Kingston Streets, and some areas off of Walker St. For the most part all of Alamogordo is pretty safe. I really enjoyed growing up in and around Alamogordo, some of the best people you'll ever meet. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and your family.
