My partner and I are moving to New Orleans in about a month. We're going there because he got a job at Tulane. Neither of us have ever visited, but we're going in a couple of weeks to find an apartment. It seems a bit daunting, to say the least, to find a place in a few days--in a city we know nothing about. So, I would really appreciate any feedback about neighborhoods. We're not interested in the suburbs. I don't like cooler-than-thou, super trendy (overpriced) neighborhoods. And the Quarter strikes me as too busy. We basically just want a fairly priced place in a safe (safe-ish) area that has a decent amount of space. Everyone tells us just to live close to the univeristy, but I worry that it will be too collegey. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks!

New Orleans isn’t a college town, so don’t dismiss the uptown/university area thinking it will have too much of a college feel. It is also one of the safer areas of the city. If you want something totally different, the Faubourg Marigny is close to the French Quarter and is popular with artists.
