Sudden move leaves no time for apt. hunting. Looking to find a cheap hotel to stay for a month to apt hunt. Names would be good too. $450 max.

Sorry to say, that $450/month ($15/day) won't get you a hotel in New Orleans. Your best bet is likely to rent a room from someone looking for a roommate. The spring semester is coming to an end, so there should be plenty of students looking for someone take over their leases for the summer. Craigslist should have many listings of this type. If there aren't any postings, post your own ad in the "Housing Wanted" section.

Not to mention that any cheap hotel is going to land you in some VERY bad places. Think drugs, prostitution, violence, etc. Motels on Tulane Ave. came to mind when I read this. Why don't you do a search for hostels then come back and we'll tell you if they're in decent areas or not.

Also, if you're only willing to pay $450/month on housing, you're going to need to find a roommate anyway, so dal2aus's advice is probably your best bet. $450/month will probably only rent you a room with one or more roommates - it certainly won't get you your own place in a decent area.

i keep seeing this hostel advertised on craigslist; Hostel: Between City-Park and French Quarter (http://neworleans.craigslist.org/sub/2328170771.html - broken link) i have no idea if it's a good place to stay, though; maybe someone can chime in.

Have you looked on the internet? Craigslist? From all I have heard and read for years the answer is No! Even doubling that it would probably be tight.

I know this thread is 5 years old, but it reminds me of when I first moved here. I had a job, but didn't know the city at all, and needed an apartment. I had been in the quarter many times, but couldn't afford it. I had no idea where Metairie or Kenner was. I paid $100 for a week in a hotel on Chef Menteur off of I-10. That was probably one of the scariest and most interesting weeks in my life, and I was coming from Miami, where I thought I had seen everything. I guess the point is, if you're looking for a cheap hotel in this city, just be prepared, no telling what you might come across. BTW, this was 18 years ago. I don't think you'll find anything that cheap these days.

In case anyone else needs this information, Craigslist is not working nowdays. I would advise networking or asking people rather than answering ads. The best and only way to do anything nowdays is to know somebody before you go to any city.

I know it's late, but try airbnb. Make SURE you know the neighborhood though.
