I am looking to move to NOLA too, but I work in the medical field and don't know how easy it would be to get a job.... Any suggestions? I currently live in Birmingham. I have fallen in love with the city ever since I visited starting in September, I have been now several times. I would like to move in the next year.

Did you find a place to live??? This is so late I'm sorry... we moved got established, we've been here for 6 months now and doing great... I would be happy to give any recommendations. You can message me or whatever you do on this forum, I'm happy to help!

We live at Lake Terrace Gardens near the UNO campus... the people who work here are awesome, rent is reasonable, and location for us is good

How much is rent at Lake Terrace Gardens? I'm moving to NOLA in Aug to start at UNO, but I'm probably going to have to find roommates or a shared room when I move, unless I can find a good job quickly. Right now, I make $13/hr at PayPal in Omaha doing customer service, and I pay $550/1 bedroom. Are there jobs and apartments/rooms comparable to this in New Orleans? Or is it easy to get a bartending job here w/o knowing a lot of people? (I went to bartending school in Boston....)

I have no idea about the job situation.... but 1 bdrm apartment will run about $775-$800/mo plus utilities ($30-$50)... so total around $850/mo. If you get a two bdrm its not that much more, maybe $960-$990 (wiht utilities a bit more probably. So with a roommate your probalby looking at around $500ish a month. Place is in a pretty good neighborhood too. Gated facilities, nice work staff, < 5 mins from UNO, and 15 mins. from the quarter. Moderator cut: not allowed Anyway, take care!

Yes, I'm wondering if the hospitals are really hiring. I'm an xray tech but also bone density and mammography. Any suggestions?

The area is pretty saturated with xray techs since Delgado pumps out 2 classes a year; however, since you have experience, that might make all the difference. Keep an eye on the Ochsner website - they'll most likely be one that has openings and they have numerous facilities in the area. Other hospitals to consider include East Jefferson, West Jefferson, Touro, and (as a last resort because everyone I know there hates it) Tulane. If you're willing to drive to the Northshore, Lakeview consistently hires. The only one I can think of that isn't really hiring much because of the State cutting their funding way back is LSU Interim (also referred to as University).

It can be difficult to get your foot into healthcare jobs here without knowing someone, especially at area hospitals, but it's not impossible. I went to school here in New Orleans and still had difficulty because I didn't have a relative or BFF employed at the hospital; however, after having several interviews I was recommended to another department by someone who interviewed me but chose someone else and just got a nursing job.

Thanks Pook77, I've got almost 13 years under my belt with seven years of trauma experience, and OR experience. Sounds like I still might have trouble though. If you think of any other suggestions, please feel free and thanks so much. I still very much want to live there, and will save up and keep looking.

Just an FYI, my wife was able to get a job at East Jefferson as an RN about 4 months after we move to NO. She was fresh out of school, with no prior work expiernce (other than clinical stuff), and we knew no one here. So there is opportunity... I think it's just a matter of timing (whether budgets at the hospitals allow) and persistence; fortunatley she had both. Best of luck!
