You are getting a slightly mad response on the cats issue here. I imagine that Metairie is the sort of place where people will be much fussier about this sort of thing, and I imagine that saying so will get me flamed.

I lived uptown N.O. for years and neighbours all over had cats, non-feral, some indoors, some out. No-one I saw tried to catch kill or spay them unless they were obviously feral. I have to say that one of the things I liked about living uptown was knowing neighbours so people would chat to each other about which house an animal was from before they called in the SPCA. The idea that someone would complain about an animal in their yard tells me all I need to know about the Orleans/Jefferson divide!

I moved from the UK to New Orleans several years ago, so pm me with any questions. As you might think, I'd recommend looking uptown as well, plenty great areas, crime levels pretty similar to Metairie unless you're thinking of starting a crack dealing business.

btw, the commute from Slidell to Metairie is, as others have said, a very difficult commute to make daily - I wouldn't recommend it at all

Thanks for your post. I did get very disheartened by the whole thing. The response was a very negative one towards having outdoor cats. My husband has just back yesterday from NO and has says that if we take them then we will keep them in to start with and then see how it all goes. I can't leave them behing they are a very big part of my childrens and my life.

We are due to come out end of October now. My husband is working in Metarie so thats why he wants to live there. I will email you privately if thats ok, but we are just off out now. Many thanks again.

No problem, feel free to pm me. Actually the neighbor I had with cats was English, she kept some indoors, one outdoors.

You can commute to Metairie from most areas of New Orleans metro, uptown near the zoo might be more fun than Metairie for the kids, but you'll soon work out where suits you once you're there. The suburbs of New Orleans aren't the same as suburbs in the UK - they're a lot more remote - you need a car to get pretty much anywhere.

Louisiana's public schools are horrible. Try to get them into a private school if you can. All in all, this is a pretty terrible place for a kid to grow up.

Do you have to repeat the same thing in every thread?

Yep, I'm on a mission to stop people from destroying their lives, and especially their children's lives, by moving to this disgusting place. It's the least I can do. Maybe this is a great place for an "annie_himself", but that doesn't mean that it works for everyone.

Disgusting? I'm from a very poor family, and not a Louisiana family.

I've found great success in New Orleans. Academic success, I've worked with nationally known individuals here, I've worked in Information technology for several years...New Orleans is one of the BEST places to be in the United States right now.
