Moving to NOLA area.... (New Orleans, Metairie: look for a job, safe area, universities)

I have been offered a job in Avondale just on the opposite side of the river. Can anybody tell me of a safe area around Avondale to live (Avondale itself???) or is it better to live in some areas of NO itself? Also, whats the transit situation like....is a car required?

Personally I would look for a job in another city.

Car is required pretty much.

There is a Westbank bus I think but it's slow.

Best place to live is Uptown New Orleans near the Universities if you can afford to do so.

Most of the Westbank (esp down near Avondale/Bridge City) is bad. But Harahan/River Ridge just across the Huey P Long bridge has a good reputation. And I think in the case of River Ridge, it is higher up, so it didn't get some of the flooding Metairie and Kenner got.

the Old Metairie area is pretty safe, my grandparents live there and I lived there when I was little. Also, this area doesn't flood
