I understand your frustration, but if you're relying on CL to find a place, then your frustration is just beginning. Have you tried contacting a realtor in the area? Some of the major realty companies handle rental properties (Re/Max, Prudential Gardner, Latter and Blum, etc). They will have access to listings as soon as they become available, which would be to your advantage. You tell them what you're looking for in a neighborhood, price range, etc and they will do most of the work for you.

You can also go to www.nola.com and search the rentals listings as well as www.realtor.com. Hope this helps.

If you plan to live in the city, then odds are strong that your children will be attending private school, most likely not in the neighborhood where you live. Once you find a school, then finding a home will be much easier rather than vice versa.

I am finding this same issue myself, I own a home in California and my mortgage is 700 a month, people in NO are trying to rent a room in their apartments for that much. I am blown away by this...
