Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend and I are going to New orleans during the 4th of july , (july 2nd-july5th). We need ideas of what to do and some idea of what attractions to see!

1) We want to find some classy venues, where we can dress up and find some good wine.

2) We would like to also find the area of town where the young professionals hang out, where are more upscale nightclubs , or just more young professional people in general?

3) Where can we find fun things to do on the water? We would like to find a fun boat ride or something to get a a bayou experience.

4) Any ideas where we could go for the best live music, fun bar crowds, maybe a place that has some cool french quarter shopping?

5) Any ideas what river boat ride will be most fun!?

6) Any suggestions for the best live shows or music?

7) Are there any local towns or cities we should rent a car and drive to?? We could drive for up to 4 hours , if there is something to go see outside of New orleans.

8) What area has all the voodoo shops?

9) Which area has the more upscale nightlife? Is there an area of town that has a concentration of better nightlife, that includes more than beer bars?

10) Any fun outdoor activities?

11) Where is the best shopping?

What are the coolest attractions in New Orleans that we should not miss?

We would like to get the full experience while we are there and are LEAST concerned with going to the low brow , beer bars (UNLESS they play live music)

You should start with Frenchman street. That's the local music strip, and it's real music as opposed to the rent-a-bands playing Foreigner on Bourbon.

I've never been on a riverboat or swamp tour, but for the swamp I would suggest you go to either Barataria Preserve - Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, where there are boardwalks and such through the swamp, or to Honey Island which is generally reported to be a good swamp tour (on an airboat). Honey Island is near Slidell.

If you want to take a drive, I would suggest going up River Road one way, crossing the river, and then coming down on the other side. You'll see all of the most famous plantations. Somebody else could give you a tip of which one to take a tour of.

We have some "hip" bars in the CBD, that would be a good upscale spot. Don't miss out on the cuisine, either.

Agree about Frenchmen St, but it's not upscale. It is definitely the best area for live music though!

For one of the absolute best beer bars in the country, don't miss The Avenue Pub, on St Charles in the lower garden district.

If you want to get out of the CBD/Quarter for an afternoon/evening, try heading to Carrollton and Oak Street. Lots of fun shops and bars around there.

I've been on the Natchez for river cruises a couple of times. It takes you down the Mississippi and back for a two-hour cruise. Steamboat Natchez Riverboat — New Orleans Cruises, Dinner Jazz Cruises
