I didn't know that you were also looking into Colorado, too, although apparently it's not your first choice, either..

There's no getting around it: moving involves quite a bit of money, and about a thousand different details that need attention, especially if you're beyond your twenties ( when older, you're more aware of the pitfalls, etc). Good luck, though, and I'll check back..

I packed up and moved from Shreveport (about 300 miles from NOLA) a month ago. I lived in the Shreveport area my entire life so making the move was a little worrying, but I found there wasn't much to it really. After loading the Uhaul and getting internet hooked up, I got on craigslist and found my roommate a job in a day. There are TONS of job listings on Craigslist New Orleans area. Careful with those jobs in the Quarter... you can get sucked into the nightlife and spend all your money on alcohol if you're not careful!

Living here is great so far, people are very kind ... I live in "the ghetto" and seriously, I have no fears about riding my bike @ 3 am as a white 30 yr old female. Maybe I'm crazy... idk... but I don't do drugs and stay as friendly to the neighbors as I can and nobody has given me a second look.

There's a reason New Orleans was the fastest growing major city in the US last year. It's a fantastic place to live with lots to see and do

I am up for a blogging job that pays 30k and would allow me to be mobile and do it from anywhere but I just read that you need 34k to live decent in NOLA. I am also interviewing for a job where I am now that pays low 50s. e'll see what happens. I'm single and no kids with no desire to acquire a wife or kids so if I get offered the 30k gig I might just take it because the ability to have a job that I can do from anywhere is pretty cool. I'd have to make some more money on the side though. Eh, who knows, I'll have to wait and see if I get a firm offer from either one first.

Be patient! It took me several years to get an offer that allowed me to move to New Orleans without losing income. Your best bet may be just to keep networking, keep an eye out, keep applying, and wait until the right thing comes along. Visit in the meanwhile, save your money and keep your goals in sight. Nothing happens overnight. This is not a huge city, so the opportunities may not come as quickly as you would like.

If you are really set on moving and don't want to wait, do it, but be aware that your strategy will be much the same: patience, networking and working a service industry type job to pay your bills while you look for something more lucrative.

30K is doable, but its a hell of a lot more doable if you can find a roomate. You MIGHT be able to find a small 1br/studio in a decent area for $600-700, but they are hard to come by. Most of the units priced that cheap are in not so nice neighborhoods.

I didn't get the blogging job - it was a long shot anyway. I am waiting to hear if I make it to the second round of interviews for a job here in Illinois. I love NOLA but it just doesn't seem like it's meant to be. Maybe down the road.

Hey Nola,
I have lived in New Orleans for almost my entire life, so I will give you some advice. First, there are a lot of positives. Mardi Gras and Voodoo Fest are amazing, and I am sure you will really enjoy them (have not tried Jazz Fest). One of the most awesome things about New Orleans is that yes it is a city, but it has a small town vibe. Also, the people here are extraordinarily nice. Oh, and we cannot forget the awesome food!

There is one major negative to think about before you just head out without really thinking it over in your mind. I'm not sure you have thought of this, but crime here is out of control, especially in certain sections. So that "cheap" house you might buy could be in a really bad neighborhood. So, it is imperative you do your homework. Rough neighborhoods include (just to name a few):New Orleans East, Central City, and the Irish Channel.

if I am you, Nola, I would take some time to think over your decision before you just decide to go somewhere totally different from where you live. New Orleans is a great place, but not without the proper research.

Best of luck,
David

( not to butt-in to the conversation, but... )

When you say "really bad neighborhood" what exactly do you mean? To me, a really bad neighborhood would be shots fired randomly every day or at least weekly. Bars pried off of windows with breaking and entering while residents are present, armed home invasion, car jackings, frequent homicides, everything that isn't nailed down is stolen even garden hoses.

Is the driving force behind the violence large, organized gangs? It is my experience that they are responsible for the truly reckless, senseless violence foisted upon the citizenry. Whereas, the small-time gangs are only interested in peddling their contraband and messing with rivals.

Or do you mean, some drug dealing, regular non-violent theft, vandalism, and the occasional car radio gets stolen?

To some people, a "bad neighborhood" simply means the neighbors are rude and keep to themselves.

I guess what I'm asking in a nutshell is... Are any of the NOLA neighborhoods so bad, that you have to be armed in your own house, and ready to back your car away from certain blocks to avoid being ambushed? 'Cause anything else, I ain't worried about. Unless they touch my bike.

To “sort of“ answer your question, large gangs are basically non existent in the city. It's more like what you said, small gangs engaging in turf wars. New Orleans is actually safer than an average city, which is really saying something with the large underclass we have.
