Actually the correct answer to imaterry's question about why Atlanta has so many successful African Business as oppsed to New Orleans is because they have a MUCH HIGHER EDUCATED AFRICAN AMERICAN POPULATION. Trust I know I was born and raised in New Orleans and love this city but I went to college and earned my degree in Atlanta. Also you MUST remember that alot of those successful African American businesses in Atlanta are people who are NOT from Atlanta.

Poverty causes the crime.

And the same behavior that caused president Andrew Jackson, to kill other men in pistol duels, over horse bets not being handled properly, causes many of the black on black murders.

Default African American Crime in NOLA

Baloney, poverty is poverty. Crime is the lack of moral character combined with or due to single family units without fathers and for that matter without mothers as so many young babies are raised by the grandmother. It is a copout to dismiss crime to poverty. There are plenty of poor people that are not criminals. Crime is a learned behavior either from peers, siblings or parent and in some cases grandparents. We are in a 30 year period of poor parenting and single parent families. What about Ray Nagin and Bill Jefferson and Betty Jefferson, they were not poor yet they were criminals. Crime is a moral problem and it is not sufficiently addressed by black leaders. Instead they make excuses. They should take responsibility and quit blaming someone else.

Go read about European history in times of poverty.
Know what a highwayman is?
Only a fool would say poverty does not cause crime (a real big fool.)

You live in a fantasy land were an empty stomach, can be filled by moral character.

Moderator cut: off topic

Reality check,
Moral character can (not) fill an empty stomach.

In the 1950's and 1960's public housing was nice, safe and a good place for poor people to live. What is the face of public housing today? Why? are people poorer? do the people that live in public housing have less opportunities today than they did 50 years ago? Are there fewer social programs to help the poor now? What was the minimum wage in 1960? how may poor people had cars and big screen TV's and airconditioning in the 1960"s? My wife as a child had to live in public housing but when the family got better jobs and made more money then they moved out into a cheap apartment and later to better and better apartments. Then public housing for the poor was transitional housing now it has become another government entitlement where families live for decades. The government has passed so many laws to help the poor and still they are no better off and now government realizes that they will simply take from the not so poor and give to the poor. What a sad comment on a society that cannot support itself and has been trained to live off of government either through welfare or government jobs. In a word socialism.

The poverty rate in this country has been fairly consistent at about 12% since 1960.

I know this will sound incredibly condescending, but imagine that African-Americans started immigrating to the United States in 1960. This holds some truth, as it wasn't until the 60s that they enjoyed the legal protections that other groups had upon arrival. There is a general trend among immigrant groups that it takes some amount of time to be fully Americanized- I.e., fully acculturated to American earning habits(and spending, education, etc.). If you accept the 1960s as the start date for African-Americans, then, as a group, they are actually on track- and even ahead in some ways- look at Michael Jordan and Oprah. Oh, and of course, Barack Obama. When's the last president to have an Italian last name?

If I can remember, you used to pop into this board every few weeks to tell us about how bad NOLA is.

Not everyone lives behind a picket fence, or wants to. I see African-Americans everyday, all around where I live. To you black people may just be a group who makes you want to pee your pants at a stoplight, but to me, they're my neighbors. And I remain firm in the belief that we have, and are, making progress in the rise of the black population from poverty.

1. I don't have a picket fence .
2. Ray Nagin and the Jeffersons are still criminals .
3. I don't fear black people.
4. MY next door neighbor is black . I have many black co workers . I interact with black people all day .
5. I sincerely wish blacks and every other minority make progress in the area of poverty .
6. I still don't like New Orleans .
