For the life of me - I can not wrap my brain around how ignorant people can be. My family, relocated to Arizona (hell on earth) after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Every summer in Arizona, the monsoon comes. Imagine a year worth of rain in a couple of weeks. This is a known, annual weather pattern. No surprises. No pumping stations, no levies, no curb and guttering at streets, only a "canal" system owned by the power company, SRP and the mercy of your home builder.

Politicians and weather reporters in Arizona think it is "cute" to compare a lot of rain with Hurricane Katrina. Mesa mayor: Flooding looks like a 'mini-Katrina' after basins ov - CBS 5 - KPHO

Am I the only one on the planet insulted by this comparison? If you didn't live Katrina - then you shouldn't evoke a comparison. If you don't know what it means to miss New Orleans - then don't talk about what you don't know. Am I wrong?

I live in Arizona and I thought about New Orleanians as I was strategically placing tubs in my attic to catch the rain that had already soaked through my ceilings causing bits of them to collapse. But I know it was NOTHING like Katrina. I understand how you would be insulted by the comparison. I apologize on behalf of my ignorant fellow Arizonans. I agree, Arizona--Phoenix, at least--is hell on earth (Sedona in northern Arizona is beautiful). But the reason the rain was big news here is because it had never rained so much in one day--it set a record. We are used to sunshine every day. Boring. But it was definitely not a disaster on par with Katrina.

When the rain storm causes 1000+ deaths (due to negligence on the part of the federal government), leaves 70 % of the population homeless, and practically destroys your city we can start the comparisons. Until then it's on about the same scale as the a slow moving tropical storm, at best.
