Hi,

I'm interested in renting a vacation place on Washington Ave and Magazine Street. It's actually a few streets south down Washington Ave.

During the day it seemed very safe, and though very quiet at night, I didn't feel threatened- just cautious as I usually am anywhere when walking at night.

I would really appreciate all or any thoughts on how safe it is, and how late you would feel comfortable walking home.

I also have the choice of staying in a hotel a block from Lafayette sq.

Would this be a better choice for single-female traveling?

Thanks!

If you are a single female, I would not recommend staying in the Lower Garden District by yourself. I think the hotel is a much better choice.

That area get's dicey pretty quickly. If you are wanting to explore by yourself you are probably better off at the hotel.

That's the Irish Channel, not the LGD.

In the big picture, there are far worse areas in New Orleans. There is a corner store on Washington between Magazine and the river where there have been some problems, but the the surrounding neighborhood is not horrible and has been quickly gentrifying. I would not hesitate to walk around the shops on Magazine over there at night, but I wouldn't be strolling down Washington alone at 2am staring at my Iphone.

That said, Lafayette square is a safer, more trafficked area if you are really concerned.
