Greetings. My sig. other and I are coming to NO for 4 nights in December. We are staying at the Quality Inn at 1319 St. Charles in what looks to be on the border of a few different neighborhoods (great Groupon deal!). I have a few questions regarding safety. Before I get to them, let me apologize for being a hypocrite. I live in Chicago and our threads on City-Data are crammed with questions regarding crime, safety, drugs etc. They are annoying and usually undeserved. Living in Chicago, I am not really nervous about staying in an area with some transients and petty theft. My biggest concern is trying to avoid any open-air drug markets and gang activity. Is there a large amount of gang activity, drug sales, shootings etc in the vicinity of the hotel? Also, which is the actual neighborhood for that hotel? Thanks in advance. I look forward to having a great trip down there!

That neighborhood is the Lower Garden District. It's adjacent to the Warehouse District/CBD and is a fine neighborhood to walk around during the day but potentially a little sketchy at night. St. Charles Ave is the dividing line between the safer LGD and the more dangerous Central City; stay south of St. Charles and you will be fine.

In this area as well as any other area of NOLA be aware of your surroundings and if you are going to the FQ at night take an Uber or a taxi back to your hotel.

There are no gangs in New Orleans but I would take hey teach's advice and take an Uber back to the hotel at night. That area would be the sketchiest part of St. Charles.

Thanks for the responses. I was wondering if there were any no-go areas off of the St Charles streetcar. We were planning on riding a large chunk if not all of it to get a less touristy feel of things.

The primary riders are tourists so if you want a less touristy experience you might want to take the Magazine bus lol.

I have looked at Magazine St quite a bit. Do you have a favorite bar and restaurant to suggest?

I like the Bulldog for a bar, but I usually eat elsewhere.

The Rum House on Magazine is also very popular. The Bulldog is good. As for the St. Charles streetcar, not really any areas that are sketchy. St. Charles itself is a really nice and safe street (provided you remember anything can happen anywhere).

Thanks. Any Po'Boy shops that are really good along Magazine St. I'm sure there are a bunch, but one or two that stand out? I know I could use Yelp, but I feel like the folks on this site provide better info. Thanks in advance.
