Hello all,

I'm writing you from Texas. Me and my wife's 10th anniversary is coming up February 1, 2018. I'm toying with the idea of taking her to New Orleans for the weekend of 2nd - 4th. Would this be considered a busy time to go? We've been to NO one other time in our younger days. We are low crowd people interested in the history of NO, love museums and walking to get beignets and food. We don't mind small crowds but definitely are not interested in "mardi gras" crowds. Any info would greatly help as i'm starting to plan now

I think its the perfect time to visit. Its right before Mardi Gras so while it will be Parade Season, you won't deal with the extremely excessive tourist crowd that will inundate the city for MG.

I always recommend the Hyatt Regency. Its a gorgeous, immaculate hotel right in the CBD next to the Quarter...it also houses one of my favorite seafood restaurants in the city, Borgne by John Besh. Parking's a bit tricky. You either pay for valet, pay to park in the lot, or find street parking which usually pretty easy.

That is the first major weekend of Mardi Gras, so you definitely are going to get some major crowds, but nothing like that second weekend.

Hmmm....Do you guys think going beginning or mid January would be more our style? A good difference in crowds? I don't mind moving it up if will be a better time for us.

It really depends. February 2nd through the 4th is the first big weekend of Mardi Gras when all the Uptown parades start, so there will be a lot of tourists and people out but not too crazy yet compared to a week later. If you don't want to risks any such crowds maybe plan a different weekend. Though at the same time, that time of year, just about any weekend is going to be busy and crowded in the French Quarter, just not Mardi Gras busy.

Here is the schedule for Mardi Gras

I know you have two opposite opinions going on but to me, it just sounds like you would prefer to avoid such crowds during that weekend. Unless you want to go to a few parades. At the same time hotel rates will be more expensive since it is a weekend of Mardi Gras.

Honestly, I wouldn't risk it. From 12th Night (January 6th) until Mardi Gras (February 13th) there will be major crowds. However, from research in talking to data and analytics nerds who love to travel to New Orleans (natives, former locals, & tourists) I can tell you that the best time to travel to New Orleans during carnival season is two weeks after 12th Night and at a max one week before krewedelusion & Krewe du Vieux (January 27th, a Saturday). That means that the weekend of January 20th, 21st is your best bet for limited crowds, cheap travel (airfare), and hotel stays.

If that doesn't work, consider staying the next weekend, krewedelusion and Krewe du Vieux. While they're starting to attract a lot tourists (I'm in krewedelusion and have seen it explode with spectators), those parades are intimate, the floats are hand designed, and the themes are satirical in nature. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to see something that's incredibly different and unique EVEN for New Orleans. Hope you figure things out.

I'm wondering if there will be any rooms available at that time if the crowds are as bad as some of you have suggested ?
