My partner may accept a job in Abita Springs but I would like to live in New Orleans or a suburb close to the causeway. Is commuting over the causeway horrible? What's a good neighborhood that would keep me South of the causeway but not too bad a commute for him? I don't have a car but he does.

There is often a fog advisory which slows traffic, but since he would be going counter to rush hour traffic, it wouldn't be bad. What kind of neighborhood are you looking for?

The area of Metairie immediately near the south end of the Causeway would be ideal as you would not have to deal with I10 to get to and from the bridge. From there, it would be a 45min commute on a good day. Farther away from the bridge will take longer.

Yes, he'll be going against the typical commuter traffic, but poor weather and accidents can slow traffic significantly on the bridge. If weather is bad enough, police "convoy" cars across slowly or just shut it down completely. Just something to keep in mind.

The area between Causeway and the edge of New Orleans will be nicer/more expensive and prices fall off once you start moving west of Causeway. If you really want to live in the city, areas like Lakeview, Mid-City and Gentilly will be the easiest to get to and from the Causeway.

buying a house in 2017 -- metairie, gentilly or somewhere else?
Potentially relocating and looking for location advice

That's a tough combo in the city. It depends on what you consider cheap, and what you consider safe. Have you ever been here for a visit? Are you buying or renting?

Mandeville and Covington are on the Northshore, buts that's where I'd live. Many people make the commute over the bridge everyday, but no way I'd do it unless I had no other choice. The Northshore is one othe nicest areas in all of Louisiana, but be prepared for relatively high property / rental prices.

Abita Springs is on the Northshore as well so no commute over the lake to Mandeville or Covington.

It can't be done. Now there will be responses that say it's done all the time. I'm sure people commute from Slidell to Mobile every day. Rent a hotel in New Orleans for a week and make the drive. You'll pick Mandeville. Welcome to the area.

I'd recommend residing on the Northshore. It's less expensive and it's much safer. There's Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville, and Abita Springs. Abita Springs is very nice, by the way.
