Default Culture/Vibe/NIghtlife of New Orleans (Now)?

I am relocating back to the US soon and have always been attracted to possibilites in Louisiana. I have previously lived in LA/DC/Miami, I kind of want to find a replacement to the diversity, good looks and opportunity of those cities, but in the south! Would or could New Orleans be that place? After getting some advice on Lafeyette and Baton Rouge, they seemed like cool places.....but not for someone as myself, who is addicted to great nightlife (not just a beer drinking crowd) and loves upscale big cities.....but the southern charm !!!!!!! After Katrina is the city wrecked? I am sure the city has more class to offer than the puking crowds at Mardi Gras?? right?

The city is not wrecked after Katrina, there are areas that still need a ton of work.
But, if you've got money to spend on a decent place you'll be living where all the action in town is.
New Orleans is amazing, don't expect to be blown away by some southern gentilly vibe.
New Orleans is it's own city with it's own attitude.

Go check it out for a weekend and see for yourselves.

It use to have all those things and much more, untill around 1980. It's been on a downward slide ever since--The hurricane only sped up the process.A nice place to visit nonetheless. Some of the finest examples of Architecture in North America, imho.
