New Orleans residence advice
There's a strong possibility I'll be offered a job that's located here and I was wondering what areas somewhat close by that are safe & walkable. It'd be nice if it were an area that was less effected by Katrina too. Oh, and I'll be renting, not buying, if that matters.
What are the art and music scenes like in New Orleans? I don't mean museum-wise. Is there a good amount of artistic/musical people in New Orleans? Where do they live?
Housing prices are not too big of a deal. NOLA is pretty much cheaper than where I am now. Thanks!

I would not live out there. It's not bad it's just way outside town.
most artsy types live in the more sketchy neighborhoods (that aren't dangerous per se but not 110% safe either).
Marigny, the Bywater, the Irish channel (all of which are very cool neighborhoods)

Is there anyhting out there now? Since Katrina, that area is pretty much trashed. And will be again if another storm hits. It's going to be a drive from the atrsy areas of town.

P&G Folger's Coffee plant. It's still there, but it was flooded pretty badly.

Yea, that location is way out of the way, hence the cheap rent.

That area is not safe, not walkable, not supplied with even minimal conveniences. You would be better served to rent elsewhere and drive. Your safety should come first, and it will be compromised by renting in that area.

Yeah, I was wondering exactly what areas nearby would be nice to live in. Thanks!

I cant speak to other areas which might be nice in places like Mid City or the Marigny.
However generally if you can find something between St. charles Ave. and Magazine St you should be ok, generally speaking and have a lot within walking distance.

Hey my BIL works there! The plant is in N.O. East which was flooded. The closest neighborhoods/areas that weren't overly affected would be the Marigny/Bywater and Esplanade Ridge. There is also the West Bank, Uptown, Jefferson & St. Tammany Parishes, but that will be further out.
Honestly if you are looking for bohemian, the Marigny may be the place for you. It's right outside the Quarter, relatively safe, probably the closest you will be to Folgers, (still a drive though), and will have the benefit of less traffic going to work. You'd be heading out of the city (assuming you'd work the day shift) while all the traffic would be coming in , and that is always a plus in my book.

Oh great! Thanks everyone
I was curious if I would be driving counter to the traffic flow or not, so that information helps too. So I will be looking in Marigny. Thanks again!
