I've had contact with the NOPD three times. I was treated fairly and well each time. However, I am white, and I honestly think my experience would have been less favorable had I been black. A friend of mine who has lived in NOLA for years has confirmed this.
Good luck.

It's a very interesting department with a lot of history and tradition. While it has had its share of corruption, it's seen a lot of improvement. It's a very political job, so you definitely have to be careful on some things, but we do have civil service protection.
The retirement is very good, although benefits have waned a lot over the years.
My recommendation - go to a state level agency! Better pay, benefits, respect, etc. They have a good retirement system too.
Louisiana State Police is currently hiring. Troop B services the New Orleans area. If you need an immediate job, the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Office will hire you quickly, but it's mostly corrections/jail duties.

Thanks for your interest in our NOPD. Here are 2 recommendations for getting to know the department, the area from a community perspective:
Walk The Beat is an annual event in October for the New Orleans Police Department. Consider visiting to check it out, NOPJF - New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation (broken link)
NONPAC meetings happen monthly in each district so that neighbors may discuss issues in their area and get to know their Captain. Choose a neighborhood and visit one of these meetings. Just a couple of ways to check out the department from the public's view.

I'm now thinking about becoming a New Orleans cop.
The crime in the city drives me insane, I'd like to try and do something about it.

the crime here is bad but to me not as bad as chicago where i grew up you are coming from a different state so you will be treated as an outsider invader and trying to change them and thier ways here my wife attended thee academy she is from il. also when the "natives" found out she has a b.s. and would be paid $5'000 more per yr they had a fit and complained saying how unfair that is etc etc not one talked about getting a degree i would recomend doing like most come here go to the academy get your mandatory 2+ yrs you have to do with nopd the go else where as many officers do that is why nopd has a high turnover also save up as much money as possible you have to pay for everything at the academy books ,gear . uniforms and cleaning supplies for the facilities etc etc

City settles lawsuit against NOPD officers accused of planting drugs - Breaking News from New Orleans - Times-Picayune - NOLA.com
todays paper..
i was born and raised in NO , the NOPD is not the department you want to join.
it has been through so many chiefs i lost count , lack of equipment and the general area - NOLA STILL LOOKS LIKE BERUIT,..
NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY OFFER I WOULD NOT JOIN.
i had many friends that became officers then left to other parts of country for better police jobs.NOLA also had a residency requirement that you had to live in NOLA. that was lifted after the flood 3 years ago..
best to you in what you decide...

agree
joining the nopd is quick and easy because of the extremly high turnover rate chicago has a waiting list for example so if an individual needs 2yrs lawenforcement expierence on top of a B of S in criminal justice in order to apply for and be accepted to a federal law enforcement ie US Marshals F.B.I. NOPD is perfect 2yrs move on i feel for the residents of new orleans i really do but until major changes are done at the city level ie mayor district atty. etc remember mayor nagins comment "choclate city" by the way my wife and i are black i am a retired P.O. with a line of duty pension

Can I get hired as a NO Police officer
Do you think I can get hired on as a Police Officer in New Orleans if I have a General Under Honorable Discharge for Misconduct? - I failed a U/A in 1994 but was given another chance. 1996 I had a fist fight with another soilder and was chapterd.
