Ok, I know I' off track, but my FAVORITE bakery of all time was LAWRENCE'S BAKERY in Gentilly."Mr. Wedding Cake". You'd walk into the store and all around the place were different styles of his wedding cakes. Not pictures but fake cakes that were actual size wedding cakes. On the right was a small refrigerator chest that was full of Angelo Brocatta's canollis (?) Then all the doberge. Till my dying day I'll remember the large chocolate rum doberge. About 3 to 4 inches high. 15 to 16 tiny layers of moist chocolate cake separated by wonderful chocolate butter creamish frosting. Thick frosting running up and down the sides and top with a cherry on top. Very vivid memory... I stopped about 3 times a week to my way to high school and got one for breakfast. Chunked up quite a bit my junior year. Got my car taken away my senior year because of an accident. So that was that. We were living away when my sister let me know Lawrence's had closed. I cried like a sugar starved idiot.

Yup Lawrence's had the best dogerge hands down. When we would visit Lawrence's Lil sis and I used to "pick" out our wedding cakes Hmmm maybe it's time for a visit to Brocatta's this week?

Default Gambino's

Gambino's is good! Every time I go home, my sweet little mother has a big beautiful box full of the little doberge for me. But I still miss Lawrence's

Lawerance's Bakery made the BEST EVER Red Velvet Cake . My Father bought one for me every year for my birthday. After my Dad passed away, my Hubby took that job over until Lawerence's closed. I was bummed when that happened. Then one day I went across the Lake to Folsom and stumbled across Lawerance's Bakery which was located next door to Gus's Restaurant. I went in and much to my delight there it was....the original Red Velvet Cake!!!! I bought it and went home too excited knowing Lawerence's was still in business. A few years later, Lawerence's sold to another bakery which has since gone out of business. I have been searching for a "real" Red Velvet Cake since . These days, bakeries use cream cheese in the icing on a Red Velvet Cake. That is just plain not right as true Red Velvet Cake icing is COOKED. Guess I just better get used to the idea of baking my own Red Velvet Cake...sighssssssssssssssssss .
