Young/Single with a New Orleans plan (Kenner: to rent, crime)

I just turned 21 years-old. I've always had aspirations to be a screenwriter. I'm single. I don't have really any debt aside from a few credit cards that I'm paying off at my own pace -- and I want to live somewhere interesting 'n' affordable. Maybe for inspiration. Or maybe just to say I did it. Or to party. Or or or all three.

I'm a hispanic that has spent the majority of my years on the west coast. I now live in San Antonio, Texas (only temporarily.) Texans say I talk, "bubbly," [or surfer] yet there's this thing about me, that is actually quite soulful. I love soul music. Soul food. I have this fascination -- an attraction -- to the soul folk: Their stories, accent, family-like (even with non-blood,) values. The people of Louisiana, or specifically, New Orleans .. seem so simple; that's a good thing. Life seems to just flow at a slower pace. I love this. Oh and I love to party too. =)

I have a few grand to my name, though I'm determined to save a bit more.
I'd love to rent a studio in or very near downtown for cheap. Even better, I'd love to find somebody (preferably an elderly man, woman or couple,) with a spare room. How possible is this ? I get relatively nervous when it comes to crime, but I stick mostly to myself anyway, so I don't mind if the complex or neighborhood isn't necessarily the safest. Just cheap, but near the New Orleans day & night life. My plan is to eventually meet good people -- people worth getting comfortable with -- And then hopefully get a place together.

My job experience consists mostly of CSR, Call center & Airport jobs (like right now, I'm a skycap/Wheel Chair Attendant.) Are [or is] there an abundance of these positions ?

I also have this thing about driving: I hate it. Especially new areas. I would much prefer for everything to be around or near me. If this were the case, I would sell my vehicle in a heartbeat !

I'd love any sort of advice or help I can get right here on this board. My move, if I stick with this plan (and I generally do,) should be done by next summer. Am I crazy ?

The airport is a good 40 min from the French Quarter or the Marigny area. The QUarter isn't cheap but some of the Marigny is. By bus, the airport would take more than 1 hr, I think. I don't know of any call centers in N.O. unless they opened recently.

OooOooo - checking out the Marigny area, looks nice (budget wise.) That sucks about the air port location, but using public trans isn't too big of a deal to me. Or maybe I could find something downtown that could get me by.

I'm gonna give it to you straight. I use to live in San Antonio and now live in a house in the New orleans area. I wish I was still in San Antonio. Believe me the grass isn't greener on the other side. True, the food and music is great here in N.O., but the crime is off the chain. Also in my opinion N.O. has more racist people black and white than any place I've ever been. (Was in the Navy for 25 years and did world cruises). Walking around anywhere in N.O. at night is a calculated gamble at best. As for the airport job, you would be best to get a car and drive to work. It's in Kenner.
As for me my house is on the market and I am leaving asap. And as for do I think you are crazy? My answer is "Absolutely"!!
