Default Rent around Tulane

I've done a search and am somewhat clearer on rent around Tulane, but it's been many a moon since I've been to New Orleans. The last info I found on rent in the Tulane area is $1200-1500/mo.

Son will be attending in the spring...transportation is not a problem - so where's a good, safe area, not too far from the school that's a little more reasonable on rent? I'm talking street names or boundaries...we're completely lost on where to start without actually being there (which we will be as soon as we can pull it all together). We'd just like to narrow our search some and not be running here and yon and wasting time. House, apt., doesn't matter - just small and safe.

And I do realize this is a lousy time to ask....as everyone tries to settle in again...

Last time I moved to New Orleans, I rented a place managed by Ferchaud Realty, they were very nice and helpful, their offices are by Tulane. My place was across St. Charles from Tulane, next to Audubon Park (2BR, $800 mo, about 8 years ago).

Thank you, Reactionary...I understand that since Katrina rent has seriously gone up. I can find reasonable places online, but who knows where they are at? I'll put this in our book of contacts.
