Good to hear that the hometown of St Bernard is bouncing back a bit. It was looking pretty bad after the storm. It wasn't a pretty sight to see my childhood home reduced to waste after the storm (and digging through it to help recover my parent's belongings wasn't fun either). Hope you find what youa re looking for and I agree with you I wouldn't trust the levees either - not that I really did to begin with...

St. Bernard Parish has made more progress than most areas. It was so bad down there that even so, it is still pretty bad. But at least businesses are open, finally, and it seems to me that more demolition and rebuilding is going on there than in Orleans Parish. People are moving back in, which is amazing considering the essentially total, nightmarish devastation of the Parish after Katrina. Sorry to hear about your childhood home. What a tragedy. I am sure that seeing it in that state was hard to bear. It was hard for me to see the Parish right after the storm, and I didn't even live there. I am not embarrassed to say that just driving through there brought me to tears.

I never did trust the East Bank levees/floodwalls/drainage system for a strong storm, but now they are much worse. Very little has been done about these problems, though there is plenty of bickering and casting blame (as always).

Glad you have found a nice home in Colorado. Believe me, you made the right decision. As hard as it probably was to leave, I think it would be harder to stay.

I totally agree with bproven, Colorado is totally awesome. You cannot even begin to compare it to NO. The quality of life here is fantastic. If you move here you will absolutely love it and we would love to have you!

Thanks, Micktooth! I will definitely check it out. If it looks good, I'll definitely put it on my list. I have 2-3 years to decide.

Previously I had thought Colorado might be too cold, so I had eliminated it along with North Dakota and such. From what bproven said, it looks like I should give the climate a more in-depth look. A moderately cold, moderately snowy climate is OK with me (just not outrageously cold and snowy).

I have been in New Orleans for over 10 years and I use to love this city. But crime is out of control and I am now looking to move to Georgia. One of things I loved most about Nola was walking everywhere. Cant do that anymore, its too dangerous. Simple things like grocery shopping, banking, mailing a letter, getting medical treatment are no longer simple things. The French Quarter, Garden District, the basic touristy places are ok. And if you stay in those areas you probably would never know Katrina ever happened. But even the Quarter has been hit hard with armed robberies and purse snatchings. In the past year I have lost 4 acquaintances to murder and 4 to suicide and a man was shot in front of my home. And I live 2 blocks from the Quarter. I have tried so hard for the past 19 months to help in the rebuilding process, but I can no longer live like this. New Orleans is not for everybody, its a hard place to live and the criminal justice system is very broken.

Good luck in Tybee + Savannah.

It's one of the few places I could see going if I wasn't going to NOLA.

Sorry,
Things just are not the same since My Father and I were "Protecting" folks since 1947...

He went to the Lord and I left town, as most good folks did...
