I like Dauphin Island- a friend of mine growing up's family had a beach house there- it's a quiet little island.

I also enjoy Dauphin Island. We also like the beaches west of Biloxi in the Long Beach, Pass Christian areas. But I must agree that the nicest beaches are at Guld Shores and Orange Beach. They certainly are the cleanest and have more ammenities for visitors.

If you want clear water and white sand, you have to go anywhere east of Mobile Bay. If you just want the closest beach, that would be Waveland or Bay St. Louis, MS. Southwest of the city in Louisiana there is Grand Isle and Elmer's Island. Elmer's has been closed for a bit, but if it reopens, it's the only beach you can drive on around here. My personal favorite in the area is Destin/Fort Walton, FL. I brought my Louisiana gear to fish with there, and it was no match for the fish in the pass there.

The Mississippi beaches get their sand from Pensacola.

The water, however, is murky. Always. If you want clean salt water it's best to go to Gulf Shores and east.

New Orleans has great access to beaches. The beaches themselves in Mississippi aren't bad, but I agree that driving a little further to the beaches in Alabama (Gulf Shores/Orange Beach) or Florida (Fort Walton and Destin) may be worth it.

Gulfport and Biloxi are about an hour and a half.

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach are a touch over 3 hours.

Ft. Walton and Destin are about 4 hours.

We went to Destin, Fl., and feel in love with Navarre Beach, in Navarre. Pure white sand, turquoise waters,
friendly people. Went to Alabama, but did not fall in love with the beach there.

"Nice" beaches? FLORIDA, no question. White sand, blue see-through water. HOT goils in tiny-weeny polka-dot bikinis.

OR; say to hell wid Florida & go to da Quarter.

There are no "nice beaches" in Louisiana. Ditto on what everyone else has posted about East of Mobile. Pensacola, Ft. Walton, Destin, Panama. If you want lots of beach... go to Tampa/St. Petersburg. Lots of elbow room and white sands.
