I would also consider the weather- the heat and humidity in south Louisiana can be difficult for some folks. We also have hurricanes and those are a major pain in the butt. We do have a lot of reptiles, insects and amphibians in south Louisiana but for the most part we eat them.

Austin is alive and doing very well. New Orleans is dying.

New Orleans has one of the best economies in the country at the moment. Also, from the sound of it on this particular forum, there are still alot of people currently located elsewhere in the country who are interested in the NOLA life.

I would gladly live in either city, but Austin and New Orleans are very different from each other, and in my opinion, not interchangeable. You need to see and experience each place, assess your priorities and preferences and make a decision. I love New Orleans, and am not blind to its problems; have visited Austin on various occasions, but not well enough to know its problems. Only you can decide.

Austin is next to the hill country.. best bike trails, parks, nature loving place.. any natural, organic, music loving person would want to be there... College is right in town
IT's super close to San Antonio... and all the best Pretty Swimming Holes...Snow is Rare in Austin...
Most moms that live in Houston.. Most Famlies that live in Houston would jump at the Chance to get the Relocation of Austin... as it is gorgeous ...

Just look at the stats. NOLA had 150 murders in 2006, Austin had 20. Pretty easy decision, I'd say.
