Default Volunteering in New Orleans

Hi,
I am currently living in Arizona, but leaving here this summer. I am interested in volunteering in New Orleans to help out with the areas destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. I was wondering if anyone recommends certain organizations that I should go through to do this. I was thinking about volunteering later this year or early next year, between November and March. I'm assuming there will still be help needed then. Wish I could help out sooner, but I just don't think that will be possible. Can anyone give me some advice as to where to go to help out?
Thanks,
Paul

Thank you for helping the New Orleans community. You might want to contact the Louisiana Recovery Authority. http://www.lra.louisiana.gov/
It is a beaurocratic group in charge of leading the rebuilding, but they should give you some advice on where you can help. You can also try Habitat for Humanity. Thank you for volunteering your time in this great effort!

Thanks for the info Micktooth! I will check out that site. I did check out Habitat for Humanity shortly after I posted this thread actually. They seem pretty good to go through too. Well, hopefully by this fall or the 2008 winter and spring they won't even need my help, but it kinda sounds like New Orleans still needs a ton of help. Thanks again,
Paul

Did you make it to N.O., yet? If so, which organization were you able to connect with?

Being from Baton Rouge, I would suggest contacted Church organizations helping in New Orleans. There is a definate need for continued assistance as there are MANY neighborhoods stills untouched by local, state and federal assistance. Many citizens want to return however, there homes are desolate... in need of serious repair and/or rebuilt. God bless you. Search the internet also.

Search church organizations first. Do your homework. the need id definately there however, make certain to contact someone who can advise you where to begin. Good luck and thank you from one Louisianaian.
