New Orleans relocation - UGH! HELP
I'm a single woman relocating to New Orleans from Dallas for a job. I would really like some input because I'm at a loss about places to live in NO. So, here are my questions...
1. I would love to rent a house if I can find a landlord that will accept 3 dogs. Where is a good, SAFE area with houses within the city (with a good resale value) that is close to restaurants, dry cleaners, etc.?
2. Is there a safe park to run in?
3. If I decide to buy, how much is homeowner's insurance on average?
4. What areas are crime-ridden and unsafe?
Thanks!!

I don't think the dogs would be too much of an issue but there may be others. The rental market is VERY tight since Katrina. There are a number of safe parks to run in depending on which part of town you wind up in. That's all you see around Audobon / St Charles / Tulane / Loyola are people jogging, walking their dog and riding their bikes. I've seen a few people get lucky around the Tulane / Loyola campus since that area wasn't impacted by Katrina and it is a college area with a higher percentage of rentals. Where you will be working and what type of transportation you have will probably affect where you will want to be.
Homeowner's insurance is outrageous if you can find someone willing to write you. Considering you would probably want a pretty small, inexpensive house it shouldn't be too much to prevent you from getting the house. In addition to homeowners it would also be very wise to get flood as well.
There are definitely some good areas and some bad areas. You can search Google for "new orleans police crime map" and find the police reports for a given area superimposed on a map. Read the instructions on that page carefully or you may get confused and not get the map you wanted. Use 5200 St Charles Ave as a sample. Once you get the first map pick NOPD from the menu at the top. Be sure to change the date range to a whole month earlier than May after you get the first map since the default is currently only a partial month during May. Any bigger date range will return an error since it takes too long to process.

If you are looking for a safe place, I would not recommend living anywhere in Orleans Parish. Assuming you will be working in the city, the closest place I consider reasonably safe is Old Metairie in Jefferson Parish. It doesn’t have the character of New Orleans, but you can’t have everything. Metairie Road has restaurants, dry cleaners, etc, and Metairie Playground is a safe park.

You can find some nice houses to rent in the Parkview and Fabourg St. John neighborhoods. It is a safe area, and I personally think it is the best area of the city. It is not as congested as Uptown, and you can be anywhere in the city within minutes without having to get on the interstate. Nearby places to run are City Park and along Bayou St. John. City Park is where the Crescent City Classic race ends.

New Orleans
I have lived in New Orleans and yes there is crime but mainly in the poor black areas and it is black on black and usually involves drug trade. I live uptown and it is truly an area of neighborhoods in the old world sense. Unfortunately I have to move to the south florida area and am having a hard time finding comparable areas.

I just moved to the Uptown area and love it here. My neighbors are friendly and have been welcoming, and I feel perfectly safe. Like alsidw said, it is an area of neighborhoods. I am from a very small town and have never lived in a proper city (unless you count Baton Rouge :P), and I feel comfortable and at ease with my surroundings. Please don't be scared to move here. It's wonderful.

I would try the University area near Tulane and Loyola Universities. You can run in Audobon Park. I live in Algiers Point and love it,but there are no large parks. Uptown is awesome and will have everything you need there. sisterlove808@hotmail.com
