Does anyone have any advice on renting a roach/bug free apartment in NYC? I have read horror stories about people that have had ton of roaches in their apartment when they turn off the lights. Are there certain areas of the city I should avoid? Possibly smaller apartment buildings on streets that are not heavily populated? Any advice is much appreciated

Always check with people who live in the building before signing the lease. When I moved into my old place, the guy next door warned us that the management company was terrible and they had a bug problem, but we were naive and under a deadline, so we took the place anyway. Huge mistake.

Also, if you can, check out the basement.

I now live in a much nicer, more expensive building and I've never seen a critter. The building management constantly cleans, takes out the trash, and keeps our building in great shape, but we definitely pay a lot more.
