what do you think it would take for NY to become bad as it was back in the day? I read somewhere that murders are up 23% and with summer here we'll be seeing more and more. And if this continues for a few years we are in big trouble.what do you think?

I think its safe to say that most cities in the US are past that point in time. Even Newark is , and that was pretty bad = to the Bronx for a long time. But with more Cameras and Police Crime is down alot around the Region.

This sounds like wishful thinking on your part.

First of all, your claims are inaccurate, maybe made up ? So far this year there have been 181 murders citywide compared to 163 in the same time frame last year which was the lowest in 40 years. So yes ,murder is up but by 10% not 23%.Big,big difference.

Meanwhile, overall crime is actually down again so far this year. The murder rate is 90% drug dealers and thugs killing each other off anyway so it's not a totally bad thing.

Sorry to disappoint you but I think the trend is still flat or continuing down.

Hope you don't waste too much time wallowing around in your fantasies of armageddon.

because of new technology and no type of rampant drug crime will be down for a long time.

then again if another epedemic comes like the crack era or herion era then maybe new york might get worse, but i dont think nyc can ever get 2.254 murders unless our population reaches 50 million

Not unless something drastic happened, WWIII or like no electricity for months or something weird like that.

Interesting point, jordan. Not only has NY's murder number gone down from 2,250/yr to less than 500/yr but it did so with the population increasing from 7.5million to 8.5 million.
Some other cities have seen their murder numbers escalate while their population has actually gone down.

we're almost (supposedly) out of the recession, too. thank God. if it didn't happen under the recession then it just won't happen.

Roe v. Wade (1973) has a lot to do with the drop in crime. Fewer unwanted children, who would of course been in their 20's by 1993 (arguably the beginning of the drop in crime) are milling around the street corners looking for trouble. Or as the song goes from West Side Story
"Gee, Officer Krumke"

Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke
You gotta understand
It's just our bringin' upke
That gets us out of hand
Our mothers all are junkies
Our fathers all are drunks
Golly Moses, natcherly we're punks
JETS
Gee, Officer Krupke
We're very upset
We never had the love
That every child oughta get
We ain't no deliquents
We're misunderstood
Deep down inside us there is good

My parents treat me rough
With all their marijuana
They won't give me a puff
They didn't wanna have me
But somehow I was had
Leapin' lizards, that's why I'm so bad
