Default What to do in NYC?

Hi i'm going to NYC and i was wondering what would be some attractions/things to do in the city. Not particularly Manhattan itself but all the boroughs. Keep in mind i'm under 21 so anything regarding drinking/bars/clubs are out of the question. Thanks.

Well if you're into sightseeing maybe take a walk across the Brooklyn bridge or if it's nice outside one of the many boardwalks around that area. There's some fantastic shots of the Manhattan skyline from that part.

Webster Hall is a cool dance spot for 21 and under. . .I would recommend going with some friends as well.

But in short there's alot of things to do here in every borough, I would say Google and stay away from Times Square (I can't stand that place. You'd probably like it because you're visiting)

You should come over and explored overlooked Jersey. We have alot things to do like the Newark Museum which is located near the PATH or Ironbound section of Newark , where some of the Best Portuguese Restaurants are in the entire Region. Or you can go to Jersey City / Hoboken and take in some incredible views of Manhattan / parts of Brooklyn.

^ You can go there and have a complete view of the NYC skyline and A Full Scale 9/11 Memorial. There are 2 bus lines up to that state park. Or you could drive. Its called Eagle Rock Reservation, it can get very crowded in the Summer due to the fact that it has a Full Scale 9/11 Memorial and you can see all five boroughs , The Jersey Shore , All of Urban Jersey , and on a really clear day Long Island. Just some interesting things most people coming to NYC don't know or overlook.

Would it be difficult to get to each of the borough's and possibly Jersey City and spend some decent time in each of the areas over the course of a day? How would it differ from public transit (subway/bus) versus a car?

A Car in NJ allows you to be flexible , but it can be hell in NYC with all the fees and other goodies(parking). You can use PT , in both states. The Subways run 24/7 and the PATH does aswell (NY-NJ). I would stay with Public Transit less stressful , cheap and nice. Unless your going way out of the NYC Metro i wouldn't advise renting a car.

I would divide it into 2 days , outer Boroughs and Jersey. Since both offer alot. Regional Rail is very extensive aswell, and buses outside Urban areas have good coverage. Hoboken , (Waterfront , Newport , Historic Downtown and Liberty State Park ) sections are the only sections of Jersey City that would interest you most. Hoboken is like a slice of the outer boroughs crammed into this tiny city. Rich waterfront areas ,Nice Shopping Disrect and Historic & 28th Largest in the world Train station. Newark has the Newark Museum which is kinda of like a City / State Museum , very nice and big. Has an Historic Preserved House attached to it. And on certain days they have tours of the Historic homes of the Middle Class Forest Hills Section. Theres also the Ironbound disrect which has some of the Best Portuguese food in the Region.

Some Restaurants , Museums , Cafes you will get a discount on admission or meal , you would have to go to there websites. (NJ only)

You'll have use Google Maps to plot your route up to Eagle Rock. Most NJ Transit Trains and Buses run every 25-35 mins and Light Rail on Weekdays runs every 5-10 mins depending on what network your on. And up to 15 mins on weekends. The Hudson - Bergen LRT Network makes getting around and connecting to Regional Rail via Hoboken Terminal and PATH in the NJ Gold Coast very simple. The Newark Network , isn't really usable unless you want to see the Historic Homes or Branch Brook Park.

Best views of Statue of Liberty are from Jersey City ... specifically Liberty State Park, but the statue is visible from all over Jersey City. You feel like you can reach out and touch it -- and you can avoid those touristy ferries.

Check out Coney Island, and walk around on the boardwalk there.

Walk around Central Park, and maybe go for a paddleboat ride or something...especially if you will have companions. You can also rent a bike in Central Park.

Go to Lower Manhattan (Wall Street area, Financial District) and check out the awesome architecture and narrow, winding streets, Trinity Cemetary.

Bronx Botanical Gardens can be nice, but really only if you have a lady friend with you. Otherwise, at 20, you might just be bored, lol.

Catch a Yankees or Mets game?

All of these things can be done if you're under 21.

I suggest you visit the Museum of the Moving Image (Museum of the Moving Image) in Astoria, Queens which in itself is a vibrant neighborhood.

Well you can go to the Bronx Zoo. It is the largest metropolitan zoo in the US. Go to Times Square you will have fun there.

Public transportation to West Orange, NJ, where Eagle Rock is located can take a long time from Manhattan, over an hour each way, factoring in wait times for trains/buses. It would be much easier to get to/from with a car.

If you are going to be in the city over a weekend, you can go to Governor's Island. It's a free trip from Lower Manhattan and offers vistas of the skyline, and has special events and art exhibitions.

Governor's Island

You can also ride the Staten Island Ferry, which offers a great perspective on the harbor for free.

You could head to Flushing for one of the largest Chinatowns in the US in Flushing, Queens. Just take the 7 train to the end at Main Street, Flushing, and you will be in Chinatown.

You could attend a performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, or a Broadway/Off-Broadway show. For discount tickets to a Broadway show, use TKTS for half price, day of tickets.

If you like seafood, you could visit City Island in The Bronx, which has numerous restaurants, and is a small island that's very much removed from the pace of the city. It's reminiscent of a New England fishing village, and has a storied nautical past, including some craftsmen who are noted for sailmaking.

What sort of things do you like to do? Do you like museums? Do you like historic houses? Or, would you prefer to immerse yourself in New York neighborhoods?
