Have her stand back on the platform, towards the wall and away from the edge of the platform. Chances are, a crazy or drunk person will choose an easier target; one who is already close the edge of the platform.
OP, if you're serious, asking this question from a real concern, then you need to get some help. Why aren't you worried about her crossing the street and being hit by a drunk driver? Oh heck, a non-drunk driver who learned to drive in NYC. This is one of the least likely scenarios of harm that could befall someone.
If your mother is in her 40s, she is not some frail woman unable to take care of herself. I think you need to find a hobby.
YES I see it every Friday and Saturday night around 2am - 3am. Some one always gets grabbed and thrown into the tracks, those damn drunks someone should do something about that...tis tis...
Should always be careful to avoid trouble with these drunks. Last month a chinese girl in her early twenty's was killed by a drunk in Flushing. She had been hit for more than 40 times by a steel bar before she died...Really sad...
The best solution to this is to stay away from the platform and NEVER go over the caution line. A crazy drunk person would be far more likely to casually push over someone near to the tracks as opposed to using the physical labor to lift and push someone further away. Just a cute little Darwinian though for all of y'all lol.
