Hi!

Wife and I are coming to NYC for four days in September as part of our East Coast pilgrimage. It seems everyone going to NYC looks for hotels around Times Square, which I guess makes sense, for us non-New-Yorkers you think of NYC you think of Times Square.

What I'm wondering is if there are better areas in Manhattan to stay if we're just not that interested in Broadway/Time Square type things? An area with local bars etc. as opposed to extremely tourist-oriented that's pretty safe, maybe Chelsea or GW Village? Last time we were in town we stayed mid-town and it was just fine.

Thanks in advance for kind advice, looking forward to the trip to your wonderful city.

Don't stay in Times Square.

Stay elsewhere, step into Times Square for a few minutes, snap a few photos and leave. There is no way you will want all the noise and crowdedness part of every day if you stay in a hotel there.

Stay in Chelsea, East Village, West Village.

My friend just stayed at the Marcel at Gramercy (3rd Av/24th St) and said it was awesome for $200, 500 square feet. I had never even heard of it; goes to show how there are still tons of unknown places in this big city.

My friends like the Ace (New York City Hotels : Ace Hotel). It's on the N/R subway line and very convenient. The closer to a good subway line the better, in my opinion.

i actually think that you should stay in a times square hotel. you will get the hustle and bustle of a true new york experience. i stayed at the W in times square for my honeymoon weekend and it was crazy just looking out the window and seeing times square lit up in all its splendor. plus we werent too far from anywhere we wanted to go. nothing beats taking one of those rickshaws down fifth ave back to the hotel!

Um. How about looking for hotels on sites like expedia, travelocity and, perhaps, the name-your-price sites (there are caveats with those - research non-affiliated web sites that will help make you somewhat of an insider on priceline et al.)

There are some significant discounts to be found and you can search by neighborhood. And no, there's nothing to do in the vicinity of Times Square.

Thanks again for the responses. Yes, I know how to use expedia, orbitz, travelocity, etc. Searching by neighborhood doesn't help if one isn't familiar with what neighborhoods are desirable, hence my question about which areas are safe with local restaurants/bars/etc.
