Can I rent a 2 or 3-bedroom apartment, say in Astoria, then put up an ad on craigslist and quickly find a roommate or two to split the rent with? Are landlords ok with this, and do the roommates have to be added to the lease?

Also, does the 40x rent formula apply to the full cost (without roommates), or do they consider that you plan to find roommates later?

It's very easy to find roommates off of Cl. I've done it three times.

However, unless you find a roommate beforehand and apply together, your income will have to cover the rent alone in most cases.

I think you're focusing on the wrong thing. The trick isn't to find roommates quickly. The trick is to find roommates who are sane, pleasant, reliable, and solvent.

You'd have to qualify for the apt on your own, in theory, unless you had a buddy or two already lined up who were willing to be named to the lease when you get the apt. Doesn't sound like that's case though, so you'd need to ask the landlord how they felt about you subletting bedrooms. It's very common around here though.

Judyzil, try Vacation rentals, private rooms, sublets by the night - Accommodations on Airbnb
for short-term rentals or short term rooommate situations.

Exactly. If one turns out the opposite of these it is very unpleasant drama. Then you have to do it all over again.

Judy, I'm sorry to say that you may not have much luck with this. First, this is a discussion forum here, not a place to advertise what you're looking for. There are many websites for this (the main one is Craigslist), but most people will not want a roommate for two weeks. And anyone who would want a short-term roommate would probably be a young student, and not want an older married lady.

You could try for a short sublet, but, again, this is difficult to find, and if you try in advance sight-unseen, you may end up in a situation of someone trying to trick you or cheat you.

My best suggestion is that you look into some of the cheaper hotels in Manhattan that are specifically for women. You can do a search on the internet to find them. Or you could see if you could get a good weekly rate at a bed-and-breakfast.
