I'm going there on Monday with two friends (both female) and just found out one of my friends will be bringing along her friend visiting from out of town. The thing is I'm going to be the only guy (not sure if I'm being paranoid).

We'll be driving in and probably spending the day there, but not staying past 7 or 8 pm. I've heard things to varying degrees about CI ("the amusement area is completely safe with all the police around" or "stabbings and shootings happen frequently, even near the amusment parks") but what's the real deal?

Also, we didn't want to have to walk too far from where we park so we were going to park at the garage on W 15th between surf and the boardwalk. We're really just going for the amusement parks and the boardwalk, possibly the aquarium too. We're not going to go wandering around anywhere else.

During the day, the Coney Island boardwalk is considered safe.

You make it sound as if you're scared half to death, but you let someone talk you into going there. Don't worry about it; the Boardwalk is fine. (Yes, even if you walk past the amusement district in either direction!) Hundreds of thousands of people do this every week of the year.

I've been there many, many times during the day, and I never saw it as being unsafe.

After dark might be a different story.

I think I'll go this afternoon. Nice sunny day, not too hot for once.

I'm not the slightest bit worried that I'll have a bit of trouble

It's not bad at all, especially during the summer.
