It's like the mainstream perception of immigration only focuses on the US-Mexican border. New York is not getting any representation in the popular immigration debate. The problem is that NYC has a huge immigration problem. Many of the immigrants are not border crossers, so building a fence on the southern border won't alleviate New York's immigration problem. There is no solution by politicians regarding visa over stays, visa lottery, and deportation. What about the thousands who came as kids but never got legal status growing up in the boroughs? There are tons of undocumented West Indians in Brooklyn. There are tons of undocumented Dominicans in the city.

As a child of immigrants who came 3 decades ago, I think the problem should be addressed.

NYC media is mostly liberal (head in the sand) when it comes to acknowledgement of illegal immigration.

It is. Mayor Bloomberg is leading a brand new initiative to allow certain undocumented to become legal if they can open businesses and employ at least 10 people. Google it when you get a chance.

If they didn't get here by illegally crossing the border, they must've gotten tourist visas to come to NYC. Which brings us back to the federal government. Tourist visas to people in third world countries should be issued only to people who can demonstrate at least $100,000 worth of property at home.

So poor immigrants should not be allowed to come here to make something for themselves?

I believe they already do that, at the very least to a select few nations.

I say the entire US immigration policy should imitate the graduate school admission process. Let every prospective immigrant take a standardized test (a GMAT or MCAT type test, perhaps), and let only the top scorers come. As for illegal immigration - build the damn wall and stop giving out tourist visas to people who are likely to stay illegally (or at least do a lot better job of it).

This might be the most hair brained idea ever put forward on CD.

The only way it might work would be if we then turned all the hotels that would be abandoned and all the restaurants that would be closed due to the death of our tourist industry and used them as shelters and soup kitchens for the hundreds of thousands of NY'ers who would become unemployed because of the death our tourist industry.

Last I heard, tourism was one of the biggest industries in NYC and a very large percentage of the tourists are from foreign countries.I think you might be very surprised at the number who would be unable to pass your net worth test and the number who would choose not to even try to prove their net worth even though they might be able.

Talk about shooting yourself in the head because you have a headache.

It's too late to save New York from all the 3rd world people it provides shelter, goods, health care, and services to. All we can do is try and slow down the floodgates to prevent them from bursting.

But seriously, people should start having to show their proper identification (SSN) when they want to rent out a room, purchase a car or a significant expense, go to a walk in clinic, go to the dentist, etc. Then we can start to filter out the criminals and illegals.
