It seems to be a common knowledge that New York City (in particular, Manhattan) is the home of bicycle thieves. I heard that there is some bicycle lock company that even claims that if your bike is stolen using their lock, then they'll pay you the value of your bike--only if your bike was stolen in NYC! Wherever bike theft is discussed, NYC is mentioned without exception. Even some locks are marked NYC standard.

Why NYC? not LA? not London? not any other big cities?

NYC (Manhattan) --> Messenger services cannot take bikes into buildings. So they usually lock them with a Kryptonite lock to a sign post. Bicycles can get through the city faster than any other mode of transportation. Since the business in Manhattan are concentrated to mainly the Island, thus it is more adventatious to use bicycles rather than public/private transportation which must follow driving laws. As any NYr knows in midtown sometimes you can walk somewhere faster then either taking the bus/train or even a cab.

Thus the other cities listed don't have concentrated city centers.

As to why is because its an easy crime where no one gets in the way. Its like the pickpockets in EU.

For one thing, bike 'rider-ship' is higher in NYC.
