LOL. Are you kidding me?

Woodlawn ain't nothing but Irish.

You can get a 2br for about 1200, 1300, maybe cheaper. Tons of hairdressing jobs everywhere. Try looking along morris park avenue, and williamsbridge road. lots of salons there. Look for salons around little italy in Belmont and Pelham Bay and Throggs Neck on Tremont

Commute to manhattan sucks. 45+ minutes on the 4 train maybe a bus connection too.

There is an express bus to manhattan, but you could probably find work in the neighborhood.

You will be fine in Woodlawn. It's an extremely safe, very pleasant and inexpensive neighborhood.
You will also have a great support network because it is an Irish neighborhood with lots of other recent arrivals.Lot's of people will be willing to help you get adjusted.
After a while you may or may not choose to move to a more centrally located neighborhood but Woodlawn is a great place to start out. Most Irish just stay there because it's so nice even though it's a ways from midtown. They just build their lives in the community there.

Just to keep it honest here...yes as 2 Irish girls you will feel right at home in Woodlawn. However, it should also be noted that with very very few exceptions, the only people that are allowed in Woodlawn are the Irish, as much of the bars and local places will outright tell you you are not welcome or make sure you know you are not welcome if you are not Irish or of their "persuasion."
