This type of investment and revitalization should have happened years ago and beleive that the 2nd and 3rd generation folk living in Harlem are ecstatic to be living in an area where if you want to jog on the streets during the daytime regardless of color, you're allowed to do so without being hassled...

But was the lack of interest about race ? Or about social/economic class ?
I completely agree about the 2nd and 3rd generation people - my experience also, with the many people we have met.

@ Harlem Resident, the working class white neighborhoods within this city during that time weren't plagued with nearly as many problems as the black and hispanic neighborhoods were... I have no doubt that there was less investment as a whole back then as well, but the number of developments now being created to suit the new residents in these areas is what bothers me...
@ Bajan, I do feel that a number of yuppies and especially hipsters have this sense of entitlement about themselves... I never forget seeing the face of one of these hipsters with his "high fashion sense" in front of me... The word "smug" doesn't even begin to capture the face of this individual... I think I said this before in another post but in my earlier days if someone would have been looking down on me like that he would have lost his face... So I do agree with you but what I'm trying to get at is that if you are complaining about this movement you have to stick with your neighborhood and contribute to the continued diversity... If not, then your future assumptions will end up being correct...

LOL,
Harlem is a Paradise in comparison with Camden.

Why do you care about another person's "high fashion sense"? Also, why are you concern about another person lifestyle?

First off why is a comment that was written so long ago even being brought up again... Are you that bored?
Second, I don't give two cents about how anyone dresses or behaves in this city as long as 1) doesn't affect me, and 2) isn't illegal... What bothers me is the attitude (key word here) SOME of these people have towards locals and to those who do not share their feelings or idealogies... Live your life, don't compare or worry about others, treat everybody with the respect they deserve and we won't ever have a problem...

? # 1. Someone revived the thread and your post was on the last recent page.
? # 2. What you said contradicts itself. I don't give two cents about how anyone dresses or behaves in this city as long as 1) doesn't affect me, and 2) isn't illegal

Someone's attitude does not affect you and it is not illegal.

Does someone's attitude have to do with their style of dress... read the statement you so brilliantly highlighted for me and try again...

Dude. read your own statement. " I don't give two cents about how anyone dresses or behaves in this city as long as 1) doesn't affect me, and 2) isn't illegal. What bothers me is the attitude (key word here) SOME of these people have towards locals and to those who do not share their feelings or idealogies.
Total contradiction.

The common sense of some people on this forum is really entertaining... How does how a person dresses and behaves on his own time relate to the two points I mentioned and especially regarding attitude... If you want to have a huge musical chairs event in a public park and prance around drinking PBR, talking about the latest art painting that sold for 8 million dollars and the latest indie rock bands that the rest of the word just "doesn't get"... That's fine by me... But when you, personally look down upon me, give me attitude, pretend that you own a neighborhood when you argued against that same thing five years ago (i.e. stopping public park barbecues, criticizing Mr.Softee for not having organic ice cream or asking for the removal of a hot dog vendor on a busy avenue (because "we don't want the vendor to attract a certain crowd"), that's when we'll start to have problems... I think I've explained myself as much as I possibly can... If you can't understand this point... well, then, there really is no hope for you... All we can do is pray that common sense finds you along the way somewhere...
