Your listing of incidents is well..a list of incidents. So what? We know crime happens in NYC..so what? In order to make an educated deduction, you must compare and contrast, and use your brain/experience to draw a reasonable conclusion. Simply listing headlines is pointless and only proves that there is crime in NYC. Yeah we got that.

And at the rate we are going, 2010 will likely be around 2008 murders, which is the 2nd lowest crime rate on record. So I ask...what's your point with this thread? We all agree stats are fudged. Done...now let's close this thread and stick with one crime thread.

Kind of agree, as a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, I have studied many crime paterns and statstics. I have found by myself and also supported by a professor the reason why murders are down in nyc is just that the response times by ems are quick, and thanks to technology like gps ems kind find the fastest route from incident to emergency room. We also can not forgot that the NYPD does not report all crime, rest of the crime nypd reports is submitted to the FBI and the Justice Department. There is also crimes that happen and are never reported, like missing people. We also can not forget taht the NYPD is not great at solving murders, but its better off not solving the murders instead of tying an innocent person to the crime like what happens in the 3rd world. If anything if we want to prevent murders, try reading Philp K Dicks novel Minorty Report or the watch the film.

I don't know if this point has already been made- I didn't read all of the second page. But crime stats are really subjective too. For example, lets say in one day there was a hit and run with a fatality and a stray bullet that struck and killed someone. Are those accidental deaths or homicides? A police officer hits someone while on a call and kills them. Accidental death or homicide? A drunk driver hits someone and kills them. Accidental or homicide? Really depends on how they interpret the details of what happened and what they file it as.

Thats basically what they do. They try their best to list it as an accidental death or a suicide if they can.

The theory that all cities fudge their crime stats is a 'cop out' (pun intended) because we shouldnt just assume every city in fact does that and also to what degree. Its obvious NYC has a great financial incentive to do so and with recent stories leaking from the NYPD confirming this we may in fact be looking at numbers that are substantially off. Also on top of that the amount of illegal immigrants in NYC (as compared to alot of other cities in the US) makes it that more easier to scratch a incident right off the books.

Once again this is not to say crime isnt significantly down from the late 80's/early 90's but maybe not as far down as we are being led to believe.

I'd say crime has been increasing since 2007. Probably not much but still
I have my doubts.
Also, do they add illegal immigrants to the homicide count?
