For all intents and purposes ""The Westies"" gang that sprang out of grimy, gritty and gore stained streets of Manhattan's West Side, aka Hell's Kitchen, back during the middle 1970's, IS GONE, GONE, GONE WITH THE SMOG AND FOG of that area. Yes, they were this pretty fearsome, savage, wild and capricious bunch, as ruthless and bloodthirsty as any American born and bred gang in our nation's history--
((though a few foreign born gangs, such as the Russian Mob, the MS-13 gang from El-Salvador, the Mexican Mafia, the Jamaicans, the early 20th century Sicilian Black Hand gangs, and certain Cuban and Colombian drug running segments might just serve as this exception in that gruesome, blood-stained and horrific department! I mean let's face it, who has ever been as BAD, scary, utterly brutal and cold blooded as the Russian Mafia???))--
Though it would seem that the overall body count attributable to those ferocious and impulsive Irish mad dogs, standing at 100-120 over this 20 year period ((1966-1986)), would fall well short of that staggering and exorbitant body count racked up and attributable to the horrid, ultra vicious, merciless and utterly evil Roy Demeo squad operating out of the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, those prolific and insatiable Gambino soldiers that reportedly, according to most law enforcement estimates, killed and chopped up roughly 200 people over this 8 year reign of terror, featuring continuous blood-shed and brutal mayhem ((1975-1983))!
Though many, if not most, crime experts still rank the Irish American ""Westies"" gang of that era as even worse, tougher, more feared, deadlier and more kill crazy, as during one exceptionally violent and blood soaked two year stretch ((1976-1978)),
THAT notorious and whacked out Irish American gang killed, mutilated and dismembered at least 50 dudes,
DERIVING MUCH sadistic pleasure, glee and ruthless delight at being involved in such instinctive viciousness, bone chilling savagery, wild, cowboy like behavior ((for many killings were quite capricious and impetuous!)),
AND IN their truly FEARSOME, terrifying reputation FOR RUTHLESS INTIMIDATION that they so rightfully acquired, all of which resulted from such God awful, terrible violence and blood splashed, devil may care mayhem perpetrated over this relatively short period of time!
They, The Westies gang, were indeed animals, as savage and wild and murderous as any gang found throughout the annals of American crime, crazy cocaine cowboys who enjoyed killing, got high off of butchering and hacking up their various victims, and who would laugh and joke about it afterwards.
Some pretty sick, twisted and sadistic ****s indeed, and their leader during that period ((1975-1986)), Jimmy Coonan, was one of the worst, Most vicious and insane killers in American history! Thank God they're all either dead, in prison or in the Witness Protection Program ((Featherstone!)).
Yea if anyone wants to know what hells kitchen was like in the 70s n 80s, read the THE WESTIES. That's a thorough study of the last generation of working class Irish in the kitchen.
Mickey Featherstone seems to be one of the few success stories of criminals who went into the WPP... astounding considering his story.
T.J. English's book the Wastes is a fascinating read indeed and warmly recommended,as is Murder Machine which has the DeMeo crew as it's subject.
Suggest you go walking around Woodlawn wearing an orange t-shirt, union jack tophat and belching out notes of "God Save the Queen" and you will find out very shortly whether or not they no longer engage in their old violent ways.
