Generally I feel pretty safe in NYC during the day, but once it goes dark it is a whole other story, and this goes for anywhere in NYC not just the areas that have bad reputations. Taking a cab is the smarter choice over walking or taking a subway.

I would say the cutoff point or the times where you have to be a little more aware are:

After 12:00 A.M. Monday to Wednesday.

After 1:00 A.M. on Thursday

After 2:00 A.M. Friday and Saturday

After 11:00 P.M on Sunday.

I'll keep saying this, all you people who say this are correct the subways are relatively safe but you are experienced people, you're not tourists who are essentially clueless and are easy marks.

The number of times I have taken the subway to and from Parkchester in the Bronx late at night and have had no problems......However, that's me!

I'm not saying things won't happen, but the subways, IMO, are relatively safe. Like I've said in many posts, use common sense, and don't start none, won't be none!

But to add, if you can afford a cab and you feel more comfortable, then by all means take it! But if you do take the subway, you may want to stay in the mid-cars, near the conductor section (that's part of the common sense instructions).
