Default Short-term and month-to-month rentals?

My husband and I are moving to NYC in December-- He has work lined up, I will be on the job market. With only one income initially, we will have very limited options in terms of where we will be able to afford to live, but once I'm working, we should have a bit more flexibility. We don't know most of the areas we can afford right now very well, and don't want to end up getting stuck with a lease in a place we're not thrilled about.

So, what we'd like to do is rent an affordable place for a few months until I can secure a job. Are short-term or month-to-month rentals easy to come by in NYC? Any recommendations of where to find this type of listing?

I'm in a similar situation where I will have a job but my husband may not have one right away. We cannot find any good options for short term rentals in Manhattan. What we have decided is to rent the best place we can get approved for with my salary alone, which is close to six figures. We have a nice amount of savings in the bank so if we have to dip into them until he finds a job we'll be fine. I think you'll have a hard time finding desirable places to live that are month to month. Perhaps you can find this outside of Manhattan, renting from someone that owns a multi-family house or something like that. You might have to pay a slightly higher monthly rent to be able to do this.

Newyorker24, sounds like you guys are in a very different position than we are. We will be lucky if we can pull in 6 figures between the two of us and don't have any sizable savings to live off of. We're still young and childless, and our definition of "desirable housing" is probably a bit broader than yours... That being said, I don't doubt that will be a challenge to find what we're looking for.

We're really looking for a month-to-month or short-term (January to March) rental under $1500/month-ish in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Astoria. Anyone else have thoughts about whether this would be possible or suggestions about where we should look?
