116th st is safe, a ton of new development in the area so there's plenty of great apartments at affordable prices. You have plenty of buses the criss cross the area and trains are close by.
It's a very diverse area with hispanics, blacks, whites, Japanese and Chinese and people are generally friendly. I've never had a problem in the area.
There are more cops in the neighborhood than anywhere else in Manhattan which keeps it even safer than it already is. There are crimes from time to time but there are crimes happening EVERYWHERE in Manhattan, everyday. Just be street smart and keep your wits about you and you'll enjoy Harlem.
It's mostly black, Puerto Rican and various other people of Latino descent. It's more a question of whether you're comfortable surrounded by that kind of culture than whether it's "safe".
In terms of safety I wouldn't say that area is Moderator cut: Language, but yet it's no walk in the park. LOL I see people saying there is a lot of white people there, WRONG! I'm not the type to discuss race because I don't really think it matters, but there is not really a lot of white people there...
Also it's a quite busy area so you won't be "bothered" I guess. I don't know what it's like moving from small town to this area though. I mean it's still East Harlem!

The OP never listed the cross streets. We don't know if it is the Whiter Morningside Heights, the more diverse area of South Harlem, little Africa, or East Harlem. All these sections of 116th St, have a different vibe.

Yes she should have been more specific. And I should to with my post. I was talking more about 116th around 1st and Pleasant.
I live on West 116, it is safe, non white people walking around everywhere with baby strollers if that makes you feel better. But it is true.
I meant to say White People walking around everywhere with baby strollers and white men with babies strapped to their chest are everywhere around 116TH and its vicinity. Needless to say, the area is very safe, I think of the area from 110 to 125 between Morningside and 8th Avenue a GEM!!! There are many Co-ops within the area and brand new condos, well taken care of single family row houses. I walked the neighborhood late at night and except for some pockets, it's almost quiet.
It feels pretty safe, theres a good level of diversity there though if you dont mind that then I say take a shot at it.
Its not that much diversity, its about 70% hispanic, 20% black & about 10% white
