Truth is if you are moving to Manhattan, move below a triple digit street #. Above that, you see thugs hanging out on the corner, loud music, & drug dealers.

Umm, 116th from Frederick Douglass Blvd. to Morningside Ave. is fairly nice.

Lol, this is such a stupid blanket statement. For one, what about the Columbia students in the W 100s? Oh right, they're infact drug dealers too, low and behold.

I dunno I was at the new target the other day and the area we drove through to get there seemed ok. I made it back alive, maybe I should consider myself lucky?

I know this is 2 yrs later, but there are a lot of ignorant people out there and i feel i need to state my opinion. I am a 22 yr old young woman who has a 2 bedroom apartment on 115th st and 5th ave. it is just me and my daughter living here and it has never been dangerous to the point i didnt want to go outside. Late at night especially in the winter months it is usually dead outside. I work overnights and have never been harassed or followed. Guys have tried talking to me and i admit it is an urban neighborhood with A LOT of white people starting to move in but that is because new very expensive but very pretty apartments are being built here. I live in the projects and across the street from my house is a new building with a garden roof top. It is so pretty i wish i could afford 8,000 a month for a studio! On the other hand you are moving to a city where the atmosphere is going to b different from where you are from. I have been down to 42nd st and harassed by drunk white guys (irish) so it is not about race. It is about the people you live around and where there mental state is. I suggest you go and see who will be living in the building with you. In my building i am the youngest person that holds a lease. Everyone else is mostly seniors or thier children and the seniors keep the young kids in check. On the other hand my aunt lives 3 blocks away and one ave (lenox and 112) and her building is horrible! Shes closer to central park and i still wouldnt want to live in her building. People smoke weed in her hallways and are constantly playing music and she lives further down then i do! So please if you havent already moved here dont listen to the dumb stuff people say. Experiance is the best teacher so come on a nice day and see if there are people hanging around your building/block or see if the people are rude/ loud. People can make a nice apartment suck no matter what thier race is... Rude will always equal rude!

Good point, especially lame yuppie *******s... they have a way of taking a luxe building/area and turning it to crap even though it 'looks nice'. Looks are important but so are the people. Sometimes these areas have people of modest means, many colors but yet are more authentic and genuine. They aren't all drug dealers lol, most are just regular hardworking people trying to get by. And dope gets traded everywhere. As long as people mind their own business what the hell should I care?

First off it's not a totally black area.
Secondly--where my sister lives--116 between first and Pleasant has TONS of white people that have just moved in within the last 3-5 years. There are MILLION dollar apts in that area.

Why do you think Best Buy/// Target// Costco// and other GIANT super stores just opened there a few months ago??
Thats right--because it's a safe area.
TONS? dont exaggerate, the large majority east of 2nd ave is still greatly black and hispanic. and million dollar apartments? where? send me links ha

and there is a similar shopping mall in the south bronx? poor people need cheap shopping like cost co too. and best buy is closing by the way, not enough business

Ok...I'll bite.
Yes. TONS...not a few....T O N S.
Obviously nowhere near the amount in the 'richer' parts of Manhattan, but compared to just 10 years ago, then yes, TONS would be the correct word.

Clearly you don't know the area if you don't think there are million dollar {or close to it} apts.
331 E 116th St---$975,000

345 EAST 116--$1,400,000

342 EAST 116th St---$750,000

That simple Google search took me 5 minutes, which is prob more time than you've ever spent in that area since you didn't know this.
Imagine if somebody was actually in the market for it.
They'd find more.
ALOT MORE.
ummmmkayyyy?????
Now what?
